Police halt High Five Friday after concerns from parents (Northampton, MA)

Students in Northampton used to begin Friday mornings with high fives and fist bumps from local police officers, but because of concerns from parents that program has been halted.

The “High Five Friday” program aimed to bring uniformed police officers to the city’s elementary schools on Fridays to welcome students to school. The idea for the program began after a law enforcement conference in San Diego, in which High Five Fridays were promoted as a way for officers to engage with young people, WWLP reported.

Northampton police said they received a lot of support for the program from the public, but there were also numerous concerns.

During a school committee meeting, concerns were raised that not all children would feel comfortable with a police presence at the beginning of the school day. Others started to question the long-term impacts of the program and wondered if the program was valuable.

After the meeting, police were asked to pause the program, which they did.

Police attended a follow-up meeting with members of the public to discuss High Five Friday. About a dozen people attended, and concerns were shared that some of the students may respond negatively to a group of uniformed police officers at their school, specifically students of color, undocumented immigrants and children who may have had a negative experience with police previously.

The left whines about not enough community policing, etc. so the cops start a community policing program. The SJw's then claim having cops high-five kids is now harmful.

Screw these regressive parasites. They must be destroyed.

That's right. Keep that wall between the police and the community as high as possible. Feed the suspicion, don't reduce it. But then when some gangbanger kills your kid, weep and wail in front of the camera that the police aren't doing enough to protect your community.

This can’t be a real news story.

Well, there is no link to a legitimate news source.

You forgot step 3: Refuse to provide any info to the police at all. Sure you know “Lil’ J” was mad at you kid, don’t snitch. let the cops figure out it out, then when they can’t solve it throw a press conference with a picture of said victim on a t-shirt.

Anyone unfamiliar with Massachusetts can just look at it this way...in this country,Cambridge (Massachusetts) and Northampton can be seen as the East Coast's answer to Madison and Berkeley.

I,personally, would love to see INS agents greeting students on Friday morning. It would be fun to watch the outrage!

Hey,you should be taking Adrian Cronauer's advice:

"You can't say dykes, you can't even say lesbian. They're women in comfortable shoes"

(From "Good Morning,Vietnam" of course)

Northampton, Massachusetts is, believe it or not, the home of the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library and Museum.

The left hates the police but they dont seem to hate the massacres in minority neighborhoods that the cops could stop. Interesting.

Just looked at the demographics. Approx 90% white, 2% black. Only 4% of voters are registered as Republicans. About a 50/50 split between Dem and unaffiliated.
