Eight asylum-seekers, including four children, barely made it across the Canadian border on Friday as a U.S. border patrol officer tried to stop them and a Reuters photographer captured the scene.
As a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officer seized their passports and questioned a man in the front passenger seat of a taxi that had pulled up to the border in Champlain, New York, four adults and four young children fled the cab and ran to Royal Canadian Mounted Police on the other side.
One by one they scrambled across the snowy gully separating the two countries. RCMP officers watching from the other side helped them up, lifting the younger children and asking a woman, who leaned on her fellow passenger as she walked, if she needed medical care.
The children looked back from where they had come as the U.S. officer held the first man, saying his papers needed to be verified.
The man turned to a pile of belongings and heaved pieces of luggage two at a time into the gully -- enormous wheeled suitcases, plastic shopping bags, a black backpack.
"Nobody cares about us," he told journalists. He said they were all from Sudan and had been living and working in Delaware for two years.
The RCMP declined on Friday to confirm the nationalities of the people. A Reuters photo showed that at least one of their passports was Sudanese.
The man then appeared to grab their passports from the U.S. officer before making a run for the border. The officer yelled and gave chase but stopped at the border marker. Canadian police took hold of the man's arm as he crossed.
The border patrol officer told his counterpart that the man was in the United States illegally...

Well, we gave them their luggage back.
Canada - hope you are getting the message! You are going to get overrun with illegals, Muslims, gang members, and Takers.
Run run rundolph!
The US Border Patrol spotted their forged passports.
Hey, no $25 per bag fee!
Let’s see, a bunch of Sudanese, favored minority class who cannot be criticized, complete with perfect victims- tiny children and an feeble person- just happen to leap from a Taxi in the middle of nowhere where when they are stopped, and there just happens to be a bunch of journalists there to photograph the entire heartbreaking scene.
Amazing bunch of coincidences.
Hope Trump has the names of those border patrol agents...and the names of the reporters... because SOME GROUP organized it, or the reporters did it themselves to get a tearjerker.
Self-deportation! All righty!
They’ll do much better in Canada, more free stuff there, tell your family, tell all your friends.
For a real good time, google the reporter’s name, “Muschi”
8 fewer to feed, house and educate...
Hey if Canada wants them, let them have them.

We didn’t even give them bus fare?
Kind of like an NFL Player reaching across the Goal Line with the Football after he’s been tackled.
Who owns the Minivan now, the U.S. Government?
OOPS it was a Taxi, never mind. LOL
Oooh, too funny. Makes me wonder if this story was fake news by a fake journalist.
Cheaper for us anyway you look at it.
LOL!
What about the littering of fed govt property? Vagrancy laws? Fleeing an officer of the law?
More ne’er do wells that should flourish in the hands of our good neighbors to the north. Or not so much.
They were in the US illegally.
Guessin here..Passports are probably bogus ?
I wonder what Canada does with bogus passports ?
Canada only hands out 1 year of Free money then you’re on your own ,so I’m guessing it will be back to the US . Why are Africans that have asylum in the US running to Canada for asylum ? Send them back to Africa
Well bye!!! Don’t come back..
It happen quite often that reporters set up these kind of stories camera at the ready. The thing looks completely staged because it was. They knew in advance where the Border Patrol parks to observe the border. If the agent had overreacted it would have been an even better story.
Judging by the agents reaction, he knew he was being set up as a prop and just played it cool. He was able to remove an entire illegal family at zero cost to the country and he didn't even have to fill out a bunch of paperwork!
That's what an agent calls a good day. I bet he then took all their belongings to the port of entry and gave them to the RCMP with a big grin on his face. I bet the RCMP were mad and hopping that this does not become a trend.
