Many African-Americans are expressing outrage over a testy exchange between President Donald Trump and a veteran black journalist, with many considering the incident to be the latest indication of his inability to relate to them.
Already skeptical of Trump, many blacks said they were exasperated by the fact that, during his news conference on Thursday, the new president asked April Ryan, longtime White House correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks, to help broker a meeting for him with black lawmakers.
"Will you meet with the Congressional Black Caucus?" Ryan asked. Trump responded: "I would. You want to set up the meeting? Are they friends of yours?"
The exchange set off a firestorm on social media as many black people balked at Trump's suggestion of an assumed relationship between Ryan and CBC members because they are of the same race.
Susan Rice, U.N. ambassador under the Obama administration, tweeted an article about the incident and called Trump's remarks "notably offensive."
"I'm also really pleased he didn't ask her to sweep and mop in the room where the press conference was being held," Rep. Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri, a former CBC chairman, quipped during an MSNBC interview on Friday.
Adding to the ire: It was the second time in less than 30 days and during Black History Month that Trump said something that came across as indifferent toward black people. The president was ridiculed Feb. 1 for praising abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who died in 1895, as someone "who's done an amazing job and is being recognized more and more."
After Thursday's news conference, the CBC tweeted a copy of a letter, dated Jan. 19 and addressed to Trump, requesting a meeting. The caucus said although it got no response to that letter,

I saw the exchange...You are correct.
“Trump’s suggestion of an assumed relationship between Ryan and CBC members because they are of the same race.”
Everything is about color. Look at the idiot CBC member who became outraged at the mention of a “black hole” for another example.
No no no.
What’s more offensive? The assumption that all blacks are represented by these left wingers or that a left wing reporter is associated with left wing cbc?
OMG! This happened during Black History Month. Adding insult to injury...
While I try always to welcome the many laudable individual exceptions, there's doubtless wisdom in your rule of thumb.
History is what it is, and perhaps the future can be better, but in a society/world seemingly hell-bent on ratcheting up differences, to forego wariness is to abandon prudence and invite vulnerability.

“Its this kind of convoluted, hateful thinking that makes me avoid black people at all costs.”
It’s the reason businesses throw their resumes in the trash, just a lawsuit looking for a place to happen!

There is also an Asian Caucus.

Just no White Caucus cause that would be...you know...racist!
There was a statement during the primaries that referred to ‘New York people’ that must have been said by an R because everyone got there shorts in a knot.
What Trump did here is typical ‘New Yorker’...
I you don’t understand ‘New York Speak’ you will NEVER understand his statement.
In a nut shell when she ‘asked’ about a CBC meeting when
Trump says ‘You set it up’, it is what he left out by trying to be brief.
“Do you mean the same CBC that boycotted my inauguration?
Do you mean the same string of CBC & Black people that constantly take shots at me all day, every day?
Why don’t YOU set it up? (Or STFU)”
Oh BS. She was the one who brought up the subject.
It was a simple question. It wasn't implying anything. These people are really stupid.
If I ask them whether or not one and one is two, I AM NOT insinuating that they are personal friends of one and two.
Pull your heads out here into the sunshine, you damned dummies!
“When did a white person last sing the national anthem at a game?”
I get your point, but a white guy sang it at SuperBowl LI last month.
“Fake new! Always make up crap.”
Yup, this is absolute BS! I listened to the exchange live. It was a very civil, even respectful, conversation between DJT and the reporter.
Some Blacks are off the plantation and not likely to return....
They still think that PC nonsense rules and that it's racist to ask a Black if they would like to interface with other Blacks - even the "Black Caucus" that exists because they are Black and racist.....
Could it be that the leaders of the CBC have been getting rich through the promotion of racism where it doesn’t exist so they can hold on to their power over black people? Could it be that they know Trump might be the best friend that our black folks have ever had and those rich leaders know it, so they must stop that relationship at all costs? I believe that is exactly what is going on and I pray that enough of our black folks will break those chains and begin to think independently from their modern masters. The time is now with President Trump in power. He has a heart for those communities and what they suffer and what a loss for those folks if they do not grasp that reality and the enormous opportunity it offers to them for a far better future than they have ever had.
Anything and everything that happens sparks outrage with Blacks. The sun rising sparks outrage with Blacks. The sun setting sparks outrage with Blacks. The moon rising sparks outrage with Blacks. A sunny day sparks outrage with Blacks. A cloudy day sparks outrage with Blacks.
You’re right, and he sang only the original notes as composed.
Still a rarity in these PC times, IMO.
She asked him a question about the inner cities or something like that. He responded with something like, "Finally a good question" and asked about her. I think he made a remark about other journalists asking bad questions, and then spoke highly of her effort.
...”When Susan Rice and Immanuel Cleaver join in....you know youre doing something RIGHT!
Go Trump, go! Keep reaching out to ALL communities...to show how you WILL #MAGA for ALL....and not be taken in by the race baiters.”...
Susan Rice..Yeah! Does she have any credibility after being the one who came out and lied, bold faced, that Benghazi was caused by a video? I suppose she is an important icon when it comes to inspiring the “fake news” people.
Racists.
