Nine asylum-seekers, including four children, barely made it across the Canadian border on Friday as a U.S. border patrol officer tried to stop them and a Reuters photographer captured the scene.
As a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officer seized their passports and questioned a man in the front passenger seat of a taxi that had pulled up to the border in Champlain, New York, four adults and four young children fled the cab and ran to Royal Canadian Mounted Police on the other side.
One by one they scrambled across the snowy gully separating the two countries. RCMP officers watching from the other side helped them up, lifting the younger children and asking a woman, who leaned on her fellow passenger as she walked, if she needed medical care.
The children looked back from where they had come as the U.S. officer held the first man, saying his papers needed to be verified.
The man turned to a pile of belongings and heaved pieces of luggage two at a time into the gully -- enormous wheeled suitcases, plastic shopping bags, a black backpack.
"Nobody cares about us," he told journalists. He said they were all from Sudan and had been living and working in Delaware for two years.

I'm guessing the taxi driver stopped to check and make sure he could do a u-turn and get back ok without crossing into Canada.
That would be the only way the USBP would start asking questions.
Nobody cares about us.
Yeah we know the feeling for the last fifty years.
Just recently I spoke for about 10 minutes with a US Border Agent in a town called Derby Line,VT (google it if you have free time,it's an interesting place).Derby Line is bordered by Stanstead,QC and has a funny history,border-wise...which you'll learn about if you google it.The agent told me that there have been several incidents in which "refugees" rushed the border at Derby Line and, because your border agents aren't allowed to pursue gate crashers, were able to continue north to a town called Magoog where they stop and call Canadian police to surrender. From there,I think, they lodge their refugee petitions. And that's just one small part of the border.
And lastly, hasn't your new PM publicly declared, more than once, that despite the US's dastardly policy toward refugees such people will always be welcome in Canada? If so,that sounds a lot like Merkel a year or 18 months ago.
Note to liberals, Canada does not take US citizens as refugees.
Unless I'm mistaken this article isn't focusing on US citizens but, rather, people whose mother tongue is either Spanish or Arabic.I'd never want to move to Canada...the sight of poutine makes me physically ill! ;-)
Porous border!
just because they entered our country illegally does not give them residency, they still have to be vetted...since they are illegals, the USA is happy to be rid of them and now they become our problem. We are humanitarian and will seek out a solution... No question Trudeau stuck his foot in his big mouth but Americans popping off and denigrating a country by forecasting catastrophe when it was the policies adopted by your own administration that caused the problem in the first place is stupid. .

have you stopped to think about why the border is as it is...because since its inception, it has been respected by both countries. Now, due to American immigration policy, which I personally support, waves of illegals are fleeing North, not south...north...suddenly our American brethren on these threads are depicting Canada as a rogue nation, making scornful commentary and predicting catsatrophe.
Why do these numbskulls take taxis? Do they get a Muslim discount? Anyhow, bus tickets are cheap - https://trailwaysny.com/bus-from-montreal-to-new-york-city/#
True. We've shared such a peaceful border for so long because there was absolutely no reason for it *not* to be peaceful. One would expect to see two advanced, civilized countries having such a common border.
Now, due to American immigration policy, which I personally support, waves of illegals are fleeing North, not south...north...suddenly our American brethren on these threads are depicting Canada as a rogue nation, making scornful commentary and predicting catastrophe.
Who are these people depicting Canada as a "rogue nation" and making scornful commentary? Certainly not me...and I haven't noticed other Freepers doing so.Is it Trump or his people? Is it our press? I'm honestly flabbergasted by this statement...although I cannot be 100% certain it's unwarranted. My person opinion is that if your PM has,as I suspect, announced that "refugees" will be welcome with open arms is unwise and could lead to trouble down the road but that's it.
I'm reluctant to slam the leader of a friendly country.I'll call the leaders of *my* country every filthy name in the book if warranted but not the leader of Canada...Britain...Australia,etc.But could it be that a central issue regarding incidents like the one this piece speaks of is your PM...who,it would appear,at least several Canadian Freepers have little regard for...seeming to have a Merkel-like love for people of backward cultures and perhaps even a Merkel-like dislike of Mr Trump?
Just askin'...because you know your PM *far* better than I do.
I know how porous the border is. I may have crossed over to Michigan a couple of times in a canoe many, many moons ago.
OK,fair enough.Judging by responses I've gotten from you and your fellow Canadian,"albertbound",it sounds like I might have touched a nerve or two.Unintentionally for sure.Don't know if I'm misunderstanding Canada's current position on refugees. For that matter it seems possible that the "typical" Canadian is,at worst, unbothered by the arrival of refugees or,perhaps, might even support it.
I guess I'll just have to pay closer attention in the future.
As a side note, my observation that Canada does not accept any refugees who are US citizen was directed at liberals, not you.
An additional side note. Our present PM, "Little Pierre" is losing popularity as we speak. As the Trump administration continues to make America great again, Canadians will realize how weak our leadership is, and this will reflect in our next election.
News to me, I live ten minutes from the peace bridge, have owned a cottage in Sherkston Ontario for close to 30 years, and cross the border into Canada at least 100 times a year. I have never been stopped leaving the US, or Canada either, I repete, Never.
It is happening only recently. I live on the busiest northern border crossing. Lots of moslems on both sides. The US side comprises a large urban area.
I also live at the busiest US/Canada crossing, the Buffalo/Niagara port, still have never been stopped on my way out—and I just crossed it out and back this last weekend.
