Nine people flee U.S. border patrol to seek asylum in Canada

Nine asylum-seekers, including four children, barely made it across the Canadian border on Friday as a U.S. border patrol officer tried to stop them and a Reuters photographer captured the scene.

As a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officer seized their passports and questioned a man in the front passenger seat of a taxi that had pulled up to the border in Champlain, New York, four adults and four young children fled the cab and ran to Royal Canadian Mounted Police on the other side.

One by one they scrambled across the snowy gully separating the two countries. RCMP officers watching from the other side helped them up, lifting the younger children and asking a woman, who leaned on her fellow passenger as she walked, if she needed medical care.

The children looked back from where they had come as the U.S. officer held the first man, saying his papers needed to be verified.

The man turned to a pile of belongings and heaved pieces of luggage two at a time into the gully -- enormous wheeled suitcases, plastic shopping bags, a black backpack.

"Nobody cares about us," he told journalists. He said they were all from Sudan and had been living and working in Delaware for two years.

Maybe we should do what Mexico does. Anybody crossing our southern border is welcome to continue on to cross our northern border. But if they stop here, they get deported.

Canada doesn't want illiterate Mexican farmhands. They made a big deal last year when they waived the need for a visa For Mexican travelers. Now all Mexicans need to visit Canada (and "visit" is the key word) is a passport and a credit card (something every illegal immigrant possesses).

Canada loves to brag how willing they are to take in immigrants. Truth is, they'll take them as long as they are educated and highly skilled. I don't expect the border jumpers in this story will find themselves in Canada for very long.

"Nobody cares about us," he told journalists. He said they were all from Sudan and had been living and working collecting welfare in Delaware for two years.

There...fixed it.

Illegals. Now they want to flood Canada. Until something happens there.

The BP agent should have just let them go without any hassles! Good riddance to bad rubbish. But he was kind enough to bring their belongings to the border.

Yes, Canada will show how embracing and humanitarian they are towards these refugees, until 20,000 more show up and they all need housing and food subsidies.

Canada needs this. The best way to destroy bad ideas is to implement them fully. We need several million of those refugees to end up in Canada so as to help burden Canadians with the reality of their ideas.

Sweden needs some more too.

Right. No US Border Patrol when you leave. Just the Canadians asking you if you have weapons or are a felon.

When I’ve crossed borders I’ve always handed my passport to an official foe examination, recording and stamping But in this case Ruters says they were seized.

Biased much?

Canada can have all the Sudanese and Somalians currently in the US.

Misspelled that key word. Should have been:

"bissalama"!

Have a safe journey – Bissalama Bye – ma al-salamah. Peace be with you – Salam alekum. Reply and upon you Be peace – Wa Alekum es salam!

Future proud lumberjacks

One thing the Sudanese are not is stupid.

These are wiley sons of bitches that probably overstayed their visas and know that the jig is up now that Trump is in control.

They know what it's like to have a government hell bent on targeting them from their experience in Sudan, so have wisely decided to make a run for the closest western country still stupid enough to tolerate them.

This means that the illegals are starting to FEAR Trump.

Fear is good.

Something is off with this article. As can be noted in some of the pictures, the US Customs Officer is just observing the “refugee” throwing his luggage into the gully.
If he was chasing him he would have had him proned out. This was a setup to make us feel bad for sending those poor “refugees” to Canada. Good riddance...take all your brethren with you. If Canada wants you good for you.

There are passports and there are visas. Passports are issued by country of origination. Visas are by the country you are traveling in. both recorded in your passport book.

Current visa rules are in a state of flux:

The Department of State had also, under the Executive Order, provisionally revoked all valid visas of nationals of those seven countries.  That provisional revocation is now lifted, and those visas are now valid for travel to the United States, if the holder is otherwise eligible.  Individuals whose visas are expired, or were physically cancelled, must apply for a new visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate, absent a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) decision to grant parole or waive the visa requirement at the port of entry.  We are looking further into this issue and will revise this site with any updates.  https://travel.state.gov/content/visas/en/news/executive-order-on-protecting-the-nation-from-terrorist-attacks-by-foreign-nationals.html

Interesting unintended consequence? Visa revoked and must be reapplied for? So even if the court stopped the executive order, it still has the intended result? Expired or cancelled visa’s must be reapplied for or they are BREAKING THE LAW. Trump got part of what he wanted, he will get the rest................

How many expired visas are there?

Following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, a fingerprinting system was set up to identify foreigners when they enter our borders. Congress authorized a similar system to track exits, but it was never set up because it’s costly and difficult to implement.

Did not know that. It would be difficult to track exits and costly. Big databases are impossible.

This case by case review, works for me. They self identify. and local authorities care beginning to implement. Good to know all entries have been fingerprinted.

This local border patrol is a warrior and doing his job.

I’ll bet a smile was on his face as he watched them self deport and said to himself, “and I don’t have any paperwork.”

Umm, no. Between 1999 and 2004 Canada received about 8,000 refugees a year over our land border. In 2004 Canada and the US signed a treaty that basically said refugees from a third country would have to apply for refugee status in the first country they landed, either Canada or the US. In other words if a Syrian refugee lands in the US they cannot claim refugee status in Canada.

Claims fell dramatically after that but ramped up to about 7,000 last year. Note, these figures are for refugee claims, not successful claims. I believe the number of successful claims are very low and most claimants are sent back. These people fleeing in the snow don't know they will be sent back.

Note to liberals, Canada does not take US citizens as refugees.

Before 9/11 US Border Patrol NEVER attempted to stop people or vehicles leaving the US. Since 9/11 they do stop individuals or groups trying to leave, don't ask me why.
