What was the catalyst for the descent?

Low cost, high quality farm land in the upper Midwest.

All the smart and/or tough Swedes immigrated (legally) to America in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Including Mrs. Dog's progenitors I must add.

This may be true for Germany as well.
