Excellent explanation at the link. Thanks for posting it!
The Emergency Spillway was a faulty design that can fail. (Strike One)
The Spillway has not been repaired. (Strike Two)
Mother Nature can be cruel. (Resulting in ?)
One interesting point he makes is that the emergency spillway had trees growing all over it, which should never, ever happen. It must be a smooth, unobstructed hillside. When water hits those trees, they go over and the root balls pop out, creating large holes which is where the erosion begins. It is specified in this design and for inspections that these hillsides be free of foliage. So who was inspecting this thing?
I just finished listening to that interview. Interesting stuff. He said that this is the first time the emergency spillway EVERT had water over it. It was built in 1968.
I don’t think that they ever anticipated using the emergency spillway. Which was rather short-sighted as it turns out.
Maybe what we need is a Department of Prevention.

Thanks. I think I’d seen it before, but hadn’t read it. There are some great source docs in the comments, like the filing by Sierra Club et al a dozen years ago asking that the emergency spillway be covered in concrete, among other things.

California Governor Spends $25 Billion Per Year On Illegals; Officials Warned Dam Failing Years Ago
Dams can and will fail if they’re not maintained properly. Now, with all the money Cal spends on BS, why wasn’t the money spent to maintain this crucial damn?
Jerry Brown and his pack of crapweasel democrats should be arrested.
The dam was not maintained because the Democrats stole the money to maintain it. The Democrats knew that if anything went wrong because the dam wasn’t properly maintained they would not be the ones that would suffer. Democrats corrupt everything they touch. Look at how they left the military. But I don’t blame the Democrats for that one. They are what they are. I blame a majority of voters because they are who said that they wanted to be ruled by a muslim.
CA is in a “perpetual drought”—did you forget??
Is the spillway the only issue with the dam?
It is hard to tell from the photo, but it appears there is some odd discoloration on the lower right hand face of the dam.
If it was only the spillway would they be evacuating? Are they currently in a situation where the dam is about to go over the primary spillway?
I was under the impression that CA was experiencing a drought.
After seeing the picture & secondary spillway picture, I am still scratching my head.
Jeebus! That’s one of the last places on Earth I would ever volunteer to go.
From the link....”may be operating without an emergency action plan”. Why the HECK is that an option?!?
HIGH SPEED TRAIN! HIGH SPEED TRAIN! MIGHT SPEED MONORAIL! MONORAIL MONORAIL.
Who needs dams? Global warmiing means it will never rain again. Or os global warming causing the rain? Nah. Bush’s fault.
“Gee Dave... that sure is a big cavernous hole back in there in the direction the water comes from, isn’t it... no tellin’ how far back it goes...”
