Right you are! Generally speaking among mainstream churches, the clergy are liberal whereas the people in the pews are mostly conservative. And that is because seminaries have been infiltrated by liberal professors just as all public and many private universities.
Why don’t they leave? Because, especially in liturgical churches such as Roman Catholics, Lutherans of all brands, Episcopalians, Orthodox, and Anglicans, the worship is void of all politics and centered on the relationship between an omnipotent God and His sinful people. A liberal and conservative kneel at the altar together because they worship the same God. And if anyone is concerned how that can be, know that it is no one else’s business. It is between the worshipper and God. We are not the judge. The one who judges them will one day judge you and me.

Your observation is exactly why my husband and I no longer attend “church”. The Methodists, the Presbyterians, and the Episcopalians all espouse too many viewpoints with which we disagree. We continue to worship God, study His word, and pray daily. We support charitable causes. However, we cannot condone many of the stances taken by “the church”.
