There is quite a bit of outright chattel slavery practiced in Africa and Arab countries today.

In the Sudan and in ISIS controlled areas there are real slave markets where people are bought and sold.

I have heard about that slavery my whole life. I remember hearing warnings as a teenager back in the 1970s that I should never travel to certain countries, where they kidnap young Western girls for the slave trade.

The slave trade in this country operates under the radar. It is perpetrated by the coyotes who get slaves by promising ultra poor people that they will bring them to a “rich country” where they will have a job and live a life of luxury. The reality, once these people fall for the bait, is that they are delivered into sweat shops or prostitution rings. This happens world wide.

As a government employee, I have to take training on recognizing signs of human trafficking every couple of years or so. It seems ludicrous to me that I have to learn to recognize signs of human trafficking when I do not ever frequent the kinds of places where they utilize slaves. Yet the same politicians who require us to take that training also do everything they can to abet the slave trade. The situation is so schizophrenic!
