Chris Christie told Fox News’ “The O’Reilly Factor” on Thursday that President Donald Trump’s executive order pausing immigration from seven predominantly Muslim countries “wasn’t communicated … in the right way governmentally” to ensure smooth implementation, which gave the Left the opportunity to mischaracterize the policy.
“It wasn’t explained in the right way, and it wasn’t communicated — it seems to me — in the right way governmentally to make sure that it was implemented smoothly in the beginning, and so a lot of the way the left has now mischaracterized what I think is a policy that really has moved the country in the right direction. It was allowed to mischaracterize it, because it wasn’t rolled out in the correct way,” Christie said. […]

The immigration EO should have exempted green card holders, people in transit, and people with already-issued visas unless there was some specific reason to revoke a visa on a case-by-case basis. (Which we have always been willing and able to do.) And the thing should not have been rolled out in a way that took by surprise the people at worker bee levels who had to implement it.
20/20 hindsight? Really? You didn’t have to be a genius to have figured out that blindsiding green card holders and people already in transit was going to blow up in our face. I don’t trust much of what I read in the press, but I will be very interested in credible accounts of how some pretty obvious concerns were overridden, and by whom.
No. The problem is that this fumble made it look like Trump is surrounded by people who have never heard of a green card, who never paused to think that suddenly changing the rules on people with valid visas who were already in transit was unfair, and who think they are too important to consult with anyone who actually knows what he is doing.
I have to believe that the several errors in the rollout of the EO had been flagged and discussed by someone, and probably several someones, in the White House and the agencies. But these someones were clearly overridden. This had the feel of a number of fiascos early in other administrations when there were too many campaign people plugged into jobs for which they had no experience, no expertise, and no feel. I'm willing to write this one off as growing pains, but it is important that Trump supporters not mindlessly defend even the mistakes. And it's important for Trump himself to recognize who gave him bad advice. I'm not saying he should throw anyone under the bus, but he needs to recognize who is not ready for the big time.
Trump put a sensible policy change in jeopardy, generated an unnecessary firestorm (in which he put himself in an untenable position), and created what will be a permanent talking point for the other side by going off half-cocked. The administration responded pretty quickly and got the green card holders and in-transit people cleared, but Trump took a black eye in the process. With a little foresight and better planning, there would have been no need for the pooper-scooper guys to have to go clean up the mess.
If he really is a good man who supports needs to stop throwing out chum to the fake news media.
Trump explained it. the borders would have been flooded if this was discussed for two weeks in public. Dumbasses.

This discussion has gotten surreal. The Administration retreated as fast as possible on green cards and people in transit with valid visas. The current party line seems to be that only a very few people were affected to begin with, so it's not a big deal. It was a screwup and now it's fixed. Why do people here defend an error that the Administration has already tacitly conceded?
I am all for much reduced levels of legal immigration and control of the borders. And I am all for rigorous ideological screening of would-be immigrants and refugees to ensure that those who come here actually share our values. Islam is inherently a problem, and as far as I'm concerned, I'm ok with banning any Muslim who is unwilling to explicitly renounce sharia and jihad, and who is unwilling to explicitly endorse religious pluralism and democratic norms. I think we should be importing education and skills, not poverty.
So I am ok with Trump's EO on immigration going forward. But it should never have applied to green card holders or people with legal visas already in transit. No one in the Administration even tried to defend that beyond the first couple of hours. It was as fast a climb-down as I've ever seen. Why is it so difficult for some people here to acknowledge error? It is important to acknowledge error because we don't learn from our mistakes otherwise.
If people here are going to take the view that Trump Can Do No Wrong, and that this Administration, unlike any of its predecessors going back to George Washington, is inherently incapable of making a mistake, it's going to be a long four years. The Trump team will make its fair share of mistakes. It's important to learn from them.

if it wasnt for the protests and riots, nobody would have said a word...not good to set policy based on rioting. All top security officials have testified that there is no way to properly screen these maniacs...Australia keeps them on some island..yet the USA lets em march on in. Mohammed Atta came and went as he pleased. The appeasement to this is just astonishing. Mark my words,,with a few years, a city either here or in Europe will suffer a mass casualty event..all because of “hurt feelings” or so called “values”. Failed states...forging of documents...this is not gonna end well.
