os Angeles (AFP) - US President Donald Trump threatened Thursday to withdraw federal funds from UC Berkeley after violent overnight protests against a planned appearance by a controversial editor of conservative news website Breitbart.
Hundreds of students and other protesters chanting "shut him down" smashed windows at the University of California campus, set wooden pallets on fire and threw fireworks and rocks as police in full riot gear responded with tear gas.
The university was placed on lockdown as the sold-out appearance by Milo Yiannopoulos, a conservative firebrand, was canceled Wednesday evening.
"If U.C. Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view - NO FEDERAL FUNDS?" Trump wrote on Twitter Thursday.

The term ‘anarchists’ is a talking point the left is using to try to disavow these leftist rent-a-mobs.
It must be because I’ve seen tons of liberals regurgitating that term on social medial.
Keeps getting better.
Feel like a newly-wed
Cut off funds to ALL colleges who dont give equal time to conservative and left speakers , professors and even textbooks. Its time we SHUT down their complete shut out of conservative thought from campuses!!!
(I’d like to not give any time to leftists, but if we can at least allow conservative professors and textbooks to get equal access that would be a start - right now they are shut out completely from most humanities, history, poly sci etc)
I LOATE my tax dollars going to support people who want to destroy my country!!
“Breitbart protests”?
Amazing how the opposition media distorts reality.
Oh my!
HERE'S why the UC kept the cops from stopping the assault on free speech:
Janet Napolitano, GEORGE SOROS HACK and President of the UC system of California.
Yes, I expect the UC Berkeley letters and calls asking for donations will step up now - as if alums are willing to pay for all the damages caused by leftist rioters.
I can’t say here what I plan to tell them when they ask... this being a family - friendly site and all..
couldn’t agree more. Amazing that the MSM was calling them students. These guys are bought and paid for.
Also broke my heart to see Police officers acting in such a gutless manor. There should have been night sticks employed.
Amazing how far society has fallen with the ideas of safe spaces and candya— coddling that is o.k. now.
The WWII men who fought for this country are rolling in their graves
I would surmise that MOST colleges and universities receive federal funds in some form: grants (especially grants), scholarships, loans, etc.
Hillsdale College excepted.
Rhetorical, I know, but *where* are ‘our illustrious, elected “leaders”’??
Why isn’t Mr. McScrotum\25-yr-buget out on the steps of D.C., like Skelator and Chuckie the Cryer, doing the same?
Oh, that’s right, they too get kick-backs (not a LOT, but enough to STFU it seems) from the DoEd.
That won’t work so well where it is cold like MN.
Ban face coverings at protests/riots and charge people with breaking laws that they are clearly breaking. Let’s not ban perfectly normal behavior for normal people because rioters do things that are subversive.
It’s long past time we stop subsidizing these cesspools of liberal indoctrination.
Milo’s CONSTITUTIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS were violated last night by a violent crowd of Fascists tacitly endorsed by the University.
SEND IN THE F.B.I., and begin a Civil Rights investigation.
ANYONE associated with this, from the the University, to the groups involved, the funders, and including Berkeley Police can be held liable for everything that happened.
Start making some arrests with RICO charges, and watch just how fast this stops.
According to reports this morning, they got approximately $360 million in grants from the fed last year alone, a lot of that went towards research.
This (in bold) is how he describes himself.
Withhold all federal funding and arrest and convict every “protestor” who breaks any law (property damage, attacking police or anyone else, etc.).
I think Trump’s tweets are genius. What he does is introduce the unthinkable into the public mind. The mere act of saying it is possible makes possible what appeared to be impossible. So, it is not so far-fetched, is it?
Federal student loan programs..yessssssss do it.
