That leaves McConnell and Senate majority whip John Cornyn with some heavy lifting to do. They either need to convince Collins and/or Murkowski to get back on board with DeVos, or make sure no one else disembarks before Pence can cast the 101st vote and keep Sessions in the Senate long enough to pull off this high-wire act. Stay tuned.

why did Obama get every damnned commie and IslamoNazi and antiAmerican extremist he wanted, and the GOP-e still is trying to undermine our election of DJT?
You don’t understand that there hardly is any “qualified” education people who are not marxists. People voted for Trump because the highly “qualified” politicians have been determined to be scum. All the “qualified” educational establishment has stood by and encouraged decades of the dumbing of America, the brainwashing of kids, and the withholding of a good education to America’s poorest kids.
If DeVos does nothing but push through school choice, which is her passion, that’s enough for me.
At this point I absolutely trust Trump’s judgment. He has been right all the way to present. Education is a difficult position to fill. Candidates with experience in the system are part of the system and can’t get very far in it or amass a good record without being sidelined or pushed out.
Who is up for a Vote first Sessions or DeVos?
*****
I’ve wondered all along why the Dems have wasted time slowing Sessions’ appointment. He’s going to be approved, and we’ve know that for at least 2 weeks, whenever it was that McCain/Graham stated their support.
Why didn’t the Dems throw in the towel quickly at that point, and then take advantage of the temporary vacancy of Sessions GA seat to defeat another, weaker, nominee?
They dumb.
I see a lot of my high school friends (all upper middle class and conservative) writing lengthy tirades on facebook begging people to call their senators to vote against DeVos. Half of these people have children in private schools. I do not really understand.
I agree that his picks have been, for the most part, impressive. But anyone can make a mistake, and after the way DeVos performed during the confirmation hearings I think she is by far the weakest link and could prove to be an embarrassment to President Trump
When is the vote on her?
She is wicked and I did not note for her and nor did any member of my family.
I agree. I was taken back when she asked about special education and federal rules and equity and assessibility she said she would look into it. What??? It is Federal rule that if States take Fed money that are required to provide services to disabled children. I raised a child with mental disability. So this is important to me.
I live in Michigan and know about Devos family. Great family and does many things for our state. BUT
She never attended a public school, nor her kids. Never took out a student loan or grant.
There are many Republican educators out there that would have been more qualified then her.
I don’t think UN Ambassador is a cabinet position.
Maybe not. If Sessions is confirmed tomorrow before DeVos then he can't vote on her. Without Collins and Murkowski then the vote is 49 in favor and 50 against.
It's considered cabinet level. Same with the EPA. I'm not sure about the SBA.
Huh thanks... didn’t knw that.
Agree. Staunch conservative but this pick is weak. This is a Jeb Bush type pick that favors the business of charter schools, quite lucrative, over professional educators, quality or not. Those in a union, and those not. She has no experience. Trump began the primary talking about local control. Wish he would stick with that and stay away from the Walton, Gates, big business charter scheme. Sounds great in utopian principle. It is another thing altogether when implemented. Read Diane Ravitch to completely understand. Baltimore, Detroit, SF, New York, not great records.
Two incompetent women seeking publicity.
Will be interesting to watch Mr. Trump weigh-in on this.
In case the two biddies hadn’t noticed, he’s not a typical emasculated GOP male.
Please call Dean Heller at 202-224-6244 and tell him to stand with Betsy DeVos.
When I heard that joke, back in the ‘50s, it was “Where is Minnesota?” —upper US.
I would like to see her confirmed. If she performs badly or inappropriately, having seen Trump’s performance so far, I have not doubt at all that she will be exchanged for another. Her possible weaknesses in the job will surely be related to effectiveness rather than philosophy and I would like to see her get her chance. If the Establishment in the DOE manages to sideline her she will be replaced.
She’s not going to make it. I expect McCain and Graham to join the NO crowd as well.
