Without California in the mix this last election would have been 306 electoral votes for Trump and 177 for Clinton.

I get the basic point, but in reality, the 53 congressional districts would be reapportioned to the rest of the country (House would remain at 435 seats).

Why would you think that?

The number of representatives in the house is not cast in stone at 435.

It is a function of the population in each state and congressional district.

Whenever a new state has joined the Union the number of representatives in the House was increased.

Why would the number stay at 435 when there would be one less state and 53 fewer congressional districts?
