Female infantry Marines will be sleeping in makeshift shelters next to their male counterparts when out in the field and no special accommodation will be offered to them, a Marine Corps official said Thursday.
Marines in the field stay in everything from a large, single room shelter filled with dozens of cots to sleeping under tarps or nothing at all, said Maj. Charles Anklam III, executive officer for 1st Battalion, 8th Marines at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina - the first gender-integrated Marine infantry battalion.
Female Marines have private rooms and bathrooms in their living quarters, and female bathrooms have been added to buildings where Marines work. But female Marines will be expected to share any living spaces with male squad members in the field to keep unit cohesion and replicate battlefield conditions, he said.
"We're not changing our tactical posture or changing how we operate to accommodate the inclusion of female Marines," Anklam said.
The battalion accepted its first three females in early January, marking the first time the Marine Corps has put three enlisted women in a ground combat unit once open only to men. They will serve as a rifleman, machine gunner and mortar Marine.
Anklam said female Marines deployed to conflict zones have shared tents with their male counterparts at times. But this marks the first time female Marines will be doing so during their regular training with their combat unit.
Opponents of the Obama administration's policy change voiced concern about the two genders sharing tents.
"You're going to have sex, you're going to have love, you're going to have relationships, and it's going to overly complicate the command structure," Marine veteran, Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter of California, told the Marine Corps Times.

I saw Blackhawk Down last night. There’s no way that women fighting in that battle would ever survive, or defeat the enemy.

I doubt that an all-female combat unit could function in reality.
Abusive language? He simply pointed out his qualifications to judge the situation and questioned yours. Granted, I understand why that might be painful to you, since getting blown up is never pleasant.

Female Infantry Marines? Really? Ridiculous.
Nobody has a ‘right’ to serve, it is a privilege reserved for those who have the right attributes to be an asset rather than a liability. Even if there are a handful of women physically capable of matching a fit young man in his prime, men will always form the overwhelming majority of combat soldiers, and if their presence upsets the group dynamic and has an effect on morale or a units cohesion and fighting efficiency, then they should be excluded, because the military is about being a lethal and efficient tool, not social justice in providing a new and exciting career opportunity for women.
Of course nobody has a right to serve, and that's not what's going on. What's happening is that there are thousands of women in all sorts of military roles who are doing their job, as judged by their fellow soldiers.
I'm basing my opinion, at least in part, on the firsthand testimony of male soldiers who have served with females in their unit, or associated units.
And what I've heard those soldiers say is that these women belong, they're an integral part of the team, they're doing their jobs and, in short, they are good soldiers.
Unit cohesion is an important thing, and I've not heard a single anecdote from any male soldier that disparages female soldiers in these units, although I'm sure they exist.
I'm not saying the armed forces should be democratic, but if these women are accepted by their fellow soldiers, and it's not causing a morale problem, and the playing field is even, and everyone's doing their job then I simply don't have a problem with it...
