In Mexico, gas is fueling the flames of revolt (Gasolinazo)

Among serious responses, combating corruption is a favoured proposal. Peña Nieto recently apologised for the conflict of interest surrounding his wife’s purchase of a $US7 million home from a government contractor. And several high-profile members of his Revolutionary Institutional Party are facing criminal charges, including Javier Duarte, the ex-governor of Veracruz who went missing after being accused of embezzlement.

Cutting government expenditure, some of which is spent on outrageous benefits for public officials, was another popular suggestion.

Though Peña Nieto declared that the government had already cut expenditure by 190 billion pesos ($US8.8 billion) before raising gas prices, this information was false: in 2015, the government was overbudget by 186 billion pesos ($US8.6 billion).

Build the wall. Crash the peso. Tax wire transfers.

Destroy the Mexican economy.

Then, Mexicans will turn on each other, as they are no longer able to export their social problems to the USA. We get to watch, protected by Trump’s shiny new wall.

Racist? I don’t care. This failed state has been ripping us off for my entire adult life. I don’t care whether they’re brown or white or pink or striped. No more sympathy for a nation of thieves.

Mexico is going to beg us to pay for the wall...

So we will help them avert a revolution

“Mexico needs to open its lands to US frackers.”

After nationalizing everything that private companies invested last time (how PEMEX was formed), they might find it difficult to get anyone to invest again.

Our open border is likely the reason they have not had a revolution in many years. Revolutions used to pop up regularly there.

In addition to a failing infrastructure, dwindling reserves have created urgency in completing some type of reform. Only 20% of Mexico has been extensively explored for further reserves, and it has been argued that Pemex will need the help of some form of foreign investment to successfully explore new reserves, including in the Gulf of Mexico.[18]”

That’s why so many Mexican immigrants didn’t speak Spanish - they were the indigenous that Mexican society discriminates against.

No more sympathy for a nation of thieves.

Not just a nation of thieves, but a neighbor that isn’t even an ally. Where have these SOBs been in our world wars, Korea, Vietnam? There were plenty of Mexicans in those wars for the USA, but not from their Army. They are our allies like Ireland is to Great Brittain

When in serious domestic trouble, it is to the advantage of the incumbent to be able to focus attention on an external threat. Trump has graciously provided Nieto with just such a distraction. This is not an accident. Nieto will owe Trump big time, once the crisis is past. Watch and see.

I haven’t kept up for years but when our politicians used to refer to Mexico as our friendly neighbor to the South, I took note that they did not even vote with us at the U.N. so hard to believe so many think they deserve special treatment.

Then we better hurry. Our media has not been reporting much on the unrest in Mexico but what I do see and hear sounds pretty serious.
