The boy is not Drew’s biological son, and he isn’t married to the mother. He does seem to take an active role in being a good Dad to the boy, which clearly he needs.
I’m guessing there is more maternal influence in this - maybe why Drew never sealed the deal with her.

I had a cousin like this. My uncle’s wife’s kid from a previous marriage. She was always jealously protected that kid and would not allow my uncle to meet out discipline in any way.

My cousin was dead at 35.
