In those pictures and others that I have seen posted, there is consistently one area that remains unfilled. In the picture at the link, it is about a quarter of the way down on the right. Another aerial shot posted elsewhere shows that it is triangular in shape. I wonder what was wrong with the ground there that inhibited people from standing there?

If you zoom in on the empty space there are barriers erected in the middle of the section with just a few people standing behind them. I wonder if they did that to make the crowd look more sparse.
Not sure if it’s the area you’re referring to, but there was an enormous section of the mall that had recently been seeded for grass and had been covered with a sheet of plastic. It was slippery for walking.
