If the Senate is controlled by the Republicans, how can one solitary Democrat obstruct and hold back the nomination.

The Supreme court nominees need 60 votes, not the 51 in the nuclear option for cabinet appointments..
The Republicans have 52 votes
The Republicans need democrats to vote with them to get to 60.
If Chuck Shumer can keep the democrats from crossing over , the Republicans can't vote in a Supreme court Judge. -Tom

I said 60 votes because the democrats will filibuster and 3/5 of the senators will be needed to override the filibuster and confirm the supreme court justice. -Tom
