USDA Study Reveals What Food Stamps Are Really Spent On (10% of Budget on Soft Drinks alone!)
The American Thinker ^ | Jan 15 2017 | Thomas Lifson

Michael Bloomberg and Michelle Obama have been lecturing us (or at least those among us who use food stamps, aka SNAP) to no avail when it comes to sugary soft drinks. Anahad O’Conner of the New York Times reports:

What do households on food stamps buy at the grocery store?

The answer was largely a mystery until now. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the $74 billion food stamp program called SNAP, has published a detailed report that provides a glimpse into the shopping cart of the typical household that receives food stamps.

The findings show that the No. 1 purchases by SNAP households are soft drinks, which accounted for about 10 percent of the dollars they spent on food.

The food stamp crowd likes soft drinks a lot more than those who pay for their own food:

SNAP households spent 9.3 percent of their grocery budgets on soft drinks alone. That was slightly higher than the 7.1 percent figure for households that do not receive food stamps.

That amounts to 31% more soft drink consumption by those who don’t have to pay for it. Let me hazard a guess that people who qualify for food stamps also disproportionately do not pay fully for their medical care though either Medicaid or Obamacare subsidies.

Here’s the scam:

Alot of the soft drinks are resold to two bit gas stations in the hood. Converts SNAP to cash, and the gas station owners pay less to stock their shelves....and ghost inventory probably helps at the end of the month when they shield cash transactions from the tax man.

I'm torn; people should drink whatever they want but that usually applies if its your own money. It's senseless to waste dollars, paying people to drink sugar. I'd make it illegal. If you need some caffeine, get some tea bags.

If they don't like it, it might encourage them to get a job. Tough love.

How things have changed since I was a kid. We grew up poor, and a soft drink was a treat, like maybe once a month. But we ate good and had clothing and other necessities. Real poor people were skinny with ragged clothes.

Today? Poor are fat, good clothes, toys, drugs, booze, etc. These jackals need to be made to work for their welfare goodies.

There’s footage of arabs loading up on drinks to resell at their store.

A good percentage of food stamps are sold for cash to buy drugs.

A substantial portion of ‘food stamps’ are traded at less than .50 on the dollar for cash at stores that specialize in the trade.

If you buy soft drinks at convenience stores the price is often MUCH higher than at Kroger’s ,Meier,KMart or the dollar store.

Nor is it unusual for some to drink a two litre each day. That can easily be $70 monthly !

Food stamps, like ethanol fuel,is a program that benefits the supplier more than the recipient.

The “Debt Food Stamps” line looks doctored, to be frank.

I don’t believe you can buy pop in NY with SNAP, AFAIK.

“If they don’t like it, it might encourage them to get a job.”

The overwhelming majority of SNAP recipients (adults) are already employed, sometimes with multiple part-time jobs.

Way back when you couldn’t buy junk food or prepared food with food stamps. Now you can.
