Did you see the movie? Don't know if it was accurate, but it was certainly way closer to true history than the Leonardo diCapitated version. There were not enough survivors in one area to even attempt to swamp the lifeboat. They were scattered over a fairly wide expanse.
There were even a couple of lifeboats doing the right thing by transferring passengers while the emptied boat would go back and pick up survivors. There were many acts of even greater heroism that night.
