Despite backing what became one of the nations first successful soda taxes, Mayor Jim Kenney is now blaming businesses for the resulting spike in the cost of sugary beverages.
Theyre gouging their own customers, he said of retailers who have been passing along some of the costs associated with the new tax.

Socialist world view: Our soda retailers somehow came into this huge pile of money that needs to be redistributed to whoever they think needs it. Kinda like feudal lords. Or old South plantation slave owners.
Hey Philly, wanna get rid of soda tax?
Stop buying soda.
This starves govt of the revenue.
Plus the soda companies will turn their lobbyists loose to get this repealed.
Hes too smart to try to make people believe he believed that soda sellers were just going to take the hit of this massive tax. No one believes his fake outrage.
I think the chemtrails have kicked in.....
Yep... Straight into their re-election coffers...
Wut? Your tax massively increases the cost to the business to purchase soda. They are forced to increase the price they sell it to the consumer.
Only to a lib is that somehow misleading.
How can someone so stupid be elected to public office?

I like a real ginger ale (reeds) that i used to buy at the local beer dist. now i’m going to make my own. can’t find another dist in the burbs that carries it.
Reference: Boxer, Barbara or Pelosi, Nancy. Not only elected by low information voters, but repeatedly re-elected. PT Barnum was right.
“Since the tax is added to the wholesale price of sodas and other drinks, Kenney suggested it was both wrong and misleading for businesses to tell customers the price increase is tax related.”
kenney is correct: wholesale price increases cannot possible affect retail customers. (from: snopes.com)
If they could demonize it, they would tax it.
Over in the UK, with anti-alcohol Muslims in abundance, it did not surprise me that the Conservative Party of former PM David Cameron demonized alcohol and pushed booze tax in an election campaign.
Very, very easily.
Actually a politician will very rarely lose when betting on the gullibility of the voting public especially when betting that a metropolitan electorate is willing to believe that someone rich is getting it over on them.
Exactly. But it’s not just the soda. They will now shop their full food orders in the Burbs. Hows that going to work out for the inner City stores?
Then they have a 10% per drink tax. ( beer, wine & mixed drinks) But, it’s for the children don’t ya know! You can even calculate how much you can contribute to help these poor kids.
Only a democrat could claim that raising the tax on a product should not raise its price to consumers. I sometimes wonder how many of them are stupid enough to be sincere and how many are just liars.
Clearly, Mayor Jim Kenney has little or no understanding of Economics 101. Very sad to see so many Democrats so ignorant of basic human behavior, and basic economics.
The blame game is getting tedious.
Years ago, Nebraska was considering raising their property taxes and two DJs couldn’t understand why apartment rents would go up since the apartment dwellers didn’t own property. It was the stupidest 10 minutes of radio ever.
Maybe they should just quit selling soda in the confines of Philly. That’s probably what’s going to happen in a few spots anyway as people start buying their pop in bulk, outside of the city limits.
Not sure how it breaks down among the party as a whole, but I’m pretty sure Mayor Kenney falls into the latter category.
