Some people are just cruel, I suppose. I’ve no reason to doubt my friend.
I have heard of it. The version that I heard is that the alka-seltser bits were interspersed with bread crumbs.
A bird’s food does not go directly to the stomach. Birds do not have a stomach as such. The food would go to the crop, which is relatively thin walled and would likely burst with expanding gases.
Not all bird have crops, but gulls certainly do.

I’ve witnessed this very thing on Revere beach in MA where I grew up. Seagulls go boom when fed that stuff. Cruel people doing cruel things to animals isn’t new.
