Changing command during the middle of an important deployment is a strange thing to do — why not replace him effective the next day?

That was my take. It's seems quite abrupt and sudden.

I don’t see much into it. Since they’re [the media] really struggling to find fault with everything he does.

I think he’s doing it for the simple reason that he owns the inauguration, and he owns anything that happens after 12:01

It makes me wonder though at the timing. During changes like that is when you’re the most vulnerable to exploits. I’m sure the next commander will be with him from the moment he wakes up in the morning until 12:01, and he’s likely to have an armed security escort with him.
