Advice columnist to spoiled millennial: "you can drop out of school, sign up for the military"
Washington Post ^ | January 9, 2017 | Amy Dickinson (Ask Amy)

Posted on 01/13/2017 3:56:27 AM PST by grundle

Dear Amy: I am 21 years old and attend college out of state. I am lucky to go to college, except that I can’t do anything without parents’ approval. They pay for college because they refuse for me to have loans. The problem is that since they pay for my schooling, they hold everything over my head.

If I want to get a piercing, tattoo, etc., I need to ask — even if it’s with my money.

When I come home they only let me go out or visit friends in other towns if I give the names, address and phone numbers of the people I’m visiting.

I understood this in high school, but I can’t live like this anymore. I’m at a loss of what to do.

A Not So Independent Adult

Not So Independent Adult: Figuring out the solution to your problem does not require college-level deduction. It’s really very simple.

You are legally an adult. As an adult, you have the legal right to be in charge of your life.

This means that you can drop out of school, sign up for the military or try to get a job and rent your own place, tattoo and pierce yourself with abandon...

I gather that you are not ready to take on adulthood to that extent. And, of course, it would be wisest for you to stay in college.

And so — if you choose to stay in college, your parents will control certain aspects of your life. That’s the contract: As long as they are paying the bills, they will treat you like a teenager.

Please understand, however, that their choice to “refuse” to let you take out loans is a huge, life-altering gift to you...

Some spoiled brat’s parents cut off her college funding she says it’s because she’s dating a black guy, so she put up a gofundme page to shame her parents, and idiots are paying for her college instead of her getting a JOB to pay for it. Grades must not be good enough for scholarships or grants.

I used to think that just about every kid could benefit from serving some time in the military. Most kids need to learn how to effectively conform to some extent.

The military now focuses on diversity, limiting some of the life improving benefits.

The notion that military service is a default, consolation prize, a fall back plan is wrongful in itself. “College” is not a superior track to maturity and self-realization. Often it’s far over priced, dogmatic, and, truthfully, destructive to one’s character. Military Recruiters are not out scouting for demented freaks. If one wants to be free and independent, then stand up and do what must be done. Otherwise, shut up and obey your benefactor.

Is this "Free Republic" or "Ripley's Believe It Or Not"?

For the life of me, the only thing my brain sees when I notice tattoos and exorbitant piercings is “lemming, lemming, don’t hire, don’t hire”.

Tattoos are a way of telling the world, "I'm an idiot"

I'm sure some Freepers have tattoos, and I'm sure I'll be hearing from them. But that's the way I see it.

Anyone writing to an advice column isn’t mature enough or take responsibility for turning off the light when they leave the room.

My son joined the Marine Reserve just out of high school. Did two years in engineering school at VCU on a scholarship before going to Iraq.

He wrote:

“I didn’t join up to be part of some government conspiracy—I joined because I thought it was just one small way that I could contribute to the people of this country... although the discipline didn’t hurt much either.”

***piercings that were placed all the way around the top of the mouth on the lip,***

And to think, animal rights people used to get bent out of shape when we put hog rings in hogs to keep them from rooting up the ground.
Which reminds me, I’ve still got lots of hog rings and the tool to place them in a hog’s nose! Need a ring in your nose, ear, lip? SEE ME!

Self-mutilation. Same as cutting on their genitals to be “transgender”.

We used to help the mentally ill, now we encourage them. I guess it helps us to identify them.

Proud of your achievement! For those not so accomplished, here is a list of 7 blunders from Ghandi, avoid those and you will do well, with or without that sheepskin:
1) Wealth without work 2) Pleasure without conscience 3)Knowledge without character 4) Commerce without morality 5) Science without humanity 6) Worship without sacrifice 7)Politics without principles. Ghandi’s grandson added 8) Rights without Responsibilities.
Number 8 seems especially appropriate for the age we are living in now IMO.

We paid part of the college cost for three of our four children, but they all got student loans, which they were responsible to repay. They all earned Masters degrees, two in Education and one in Business Administration. The other child told us that if he went to college immediately after high school, it would be a waste of money, because he knew he would blow off courses that he did not like. So he went into the Navy. He served on submarines as a nuclear reactor operator, and is now a senior chief petty officer. He also has earned an MBA.

In the house I grew up in we lived by the golden rule....

My father explained it thus:

He who has the gold, makes the rules. Get your own gold, you can get your own rules. As long is it’s my gold, I make the rules. END

I think you have to make $400 or $500 to get one of those, so no.
