South Dakota narrowly overtakes Oregon, which held the top spot for the previous three years, as the nation's "Top Moving Destination." This is the first time South Dakota has held the no. 1 spot. Vermont inched out Oregon for the no 2. position, with Oregon rounding out the top three. Those are the results of the United Van Lines' 40th Annual National Movers Study, which tracks customers' state-to-state migration patterns over the past year. Retirees are continuing to move to the Mountain and Pacific West.
This winter should flush out all of the California trash. Currently -5F with over a foot of snow on the ground.
Same here. The Bay Area morons building a house across the canyon from me are freaking out. They’re complaining about the short days and long nights too. After living in Alaska for 26 years these days don’t seem short to me at all LOL!
That’s why I moved from California to Colorado.
Low taxes, zero crime and a relaxed lifestyle.
And true four season weather.
My dream is to retire in or near Rapid City, SD or in the Black Hills. Fishing, nature, pretty good weather even in the wintertime.
Oh, good. Gaslight them a bit and tell em winter is just getting started. Tip of the hat from the HooDoo Mountain area.
When I lived there, all I experienced were two seasons - winter and the Fourth of July! Even the natives admitted that!
You could also mention our 5th season, Spring breakup.
I’m aimin’ for Pluto.
“I live in CA, but it looks like Im going to retire in Mexico........... without moving.”
isn’t that the truth- Orange County, Occupied California, formerly of the USA
If your in California, it will be both.
It's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't live here (as a Conservative).
“Taxes or real estate prices?”
both. they almost always go hand in hand anyway.
Unless you want to be a Dental Floss Tycoon.
I might be moving to Montana some day.
I have thought that when I am ready to retire but still healthy, a good dose of fresh air would be perfect. I saw a late-night infomercial touting the financial benefits of dental-floss farming. A little bit of land, a pygmy pony, a few pairs of zircon-encrusted tweezers, and you’re all set.
“I am glad Oregon dropped a slot. Stupid liberals moving here have destroyed this state and turned it into the Peoples Republic of Portlandistan.
Yes, the rest of the state is rural and conservative, but the envirowackos and commies in Salem and Portland run this state and they suck at it.”
I moved to Oregon from California a year ago. Portland and Eugene are very liberal, but Salem is far more conservative.
Vermont...where there are two seasons: snow and mud.
I just checked the temps in Hayden...might be striking it off our list! Brrrrr...
I just went to my doctor today, for a checkup, and I got the “old speech” with all kinds of bizzare questions about falling and continence. Well, I’m on the doorstep, no question, but I still haven’t retired!
The point being, when I do retire, which should be soon, I ain’t goin’ nowhere. That is until somebody starts hauling us off to someplace without our comprehending why. Could happen.
Ah, Bartelby! Ah, humanity!
The Hoodoos...Mom grew up in Potlatch. Way back when it was at the end of the earth.
I still live in California; in the north inland mountain part of the state.
The southern and coastal freaks usually only last about 18 months or 2 years in this part of the state.
They come up here in the spring, summer, or early fall on their vacations and decide to retire up here.
They raise their alpacas or chickens during the first year; go through one winter, and lose all their chickens and alpacas to the coyotes, foxes, mountain lions, and bears, then decide not to raise any more livestock.
Then they discover that going out to supper requires a 4 hour round trip (nearest BIG city is Redding, Ca.) on roads subject to landslides and avalanches in sometimes bad winter driving conditions.
Then they find out you better not have a heart attack because it is a 2 hour transport to the nearest medical facility and you will probably be dead by the time you get there.
Then they go to the (somewhat local) beer hall and see nothing but REDNECKS, ranchers, cowhands, and farmers; they find out we really don’t have much in common with them.
They usually give up and go back to the big city south, and coastal areas after about 2 years.
Right now on the front porch it is 12 degrees F and there is about 4 feet of snow on the front yard; tomorrow I will fire up the tractor and the snow blower, and clean out the 3.8 miles of dirt road to the paved county road that they only plow when all the state roads are done.
They will probably get to the county road in about 2 or 3 days; depending on the weather.
