Back in the 60s I well remember driving through a large redwood in Yosemite in my uncle’s 1962 Ford pickup. The West coast mirrors which were popular at the time barely made it through. That tree fell many years ago as I recall.

When is the wake being held for Bay Area ecofreaks to pay their respects? Perhaps a big memorial group hug this Friday at Noon PST?

I think there is more than one tree that has had this done to it. Having a driveway through it that is. Toppling is what happens to giant sequoias since they have a relatively shallow root structure. The largest like the General Sherman tree are fenced off to keep people from disturbing the ground around them.

Get the movie The Long Trailer. Lucy (Ball) Riccardo & Ricky Riccardo drive their trailer right through it.

Unfortunately, Sequoia redwood is too brittle to be a good building material. It may be ok for other redwood uses though, such as yard furniture, or decking. But that would depend on how much it splinters.

Its downfall came when they decided to cut a hole in its base.

If you ever go west: Sequoia & Redwood trees, Glacier National Park, Mount St Helens, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon North Rim. Just to name a few.
Here on the east coast we have the 600+ year old Oak Trees. The Sequoias out west make them look like twigs.

It’s a plant. Plants have life cycles. Some are longer than others, but no plant lives forever.
