Far rightwing figureheads immediately invented an elaborate and racist conspiracy theory that CNN had lightened a photo of alleged Fort Lauderdale airport shooter Esteban Santiago shortly after the Friday attack. In reality, CNN had yet to air a picture of Santiago, let alone lightened a picture of him. The conspiracy also used a picture of an entirely different man named Esteban Santiago—not the alleged shooter. Still, writers at websites like InfoWars and Gateway Pundit tweeted about CNN’s nonexistent Photoshop job. Former Republican Florida Congressman Allen West, who represented Fort Lauderdale itself, even tweeted about the conspiracy and linked to an article about it on his own website.

With the current debate about fake news, he is dangerous to conservatism. We should be better than this regarding credibility.
At least they corrected themselves quickly. It took a threat of a lawsuit to get CNN to retract.

I agree. Conservative, alt-right, new media — whatever. They had better confirm and confirm again before they post news, especially breaking news. Old media is dying to take these newcomers down with them in their death throes.

If they are not intentional and corrected, fine. No one’s perfect.

My point is to put up information gotten from a random Twitter post without even checking the CNN website to confirm it is either lazy, careless, or worse, done to garner clicks knowing it will be taken down later after the initial flurry of clicks dies down.
Col. Allen West got embarrassed by linking to the GP false story.
I've encountered this at GP three or four times in the last few weeks. It's much too frequent. Whatever the reason for it, it needs to get much better in my opinion. It makes us all look bad. Let's be exceptional.

GP was implying that CNN was going to use a racial ploy to make shooter white instead of brown. CNN was not doing that, not this time. That's a smear. They do it us all the time, but, again, not this time.
yes, GP took it down, but that wasn't good enough. This would have been incredibly simple to vet. That it wasn't is not excusable in my opinion.

My comment concerns the nature of the author’s source(s) — specifically, the widespread sarcasm that castigated the MSM’s racial agenda ala Zimmerman. Whether or not CNN is currently demonic doesn’t factor into the public opinion that despises it for previous derelictions. That said, I appreciate your aim for accuracy.
On a related note. CNN cropped the photo to hide the fact that the shooter was a Jihadist.

A number of us, including many in the article’s Comments, have stressed the absolute need for accuracy as much as is humanly possible in order to keep our credibility.
The Left, as you, Bronzewound noted, is dying to take these newcomers down with them in their death throes.
However, the Marxist Left is even more determined to inflict fatal credibility wounds even if they have almost no credibility themselves.
The first rule of journalism, when trying to report on something that is not mundane, is to wait at least 24 hours before writing anything other than handed out pablum. The so-called “fog of war” is real so that approach needs to be applied to domestic issues as well.
And yes, Gateway Pundit has been getting careless in its writing over the past few months at least. Too much speculation based on insufficient facts. That is dangerous.
Our credibility is one of our most potent weapons in our war against the Left. It must be protected at all costs.
