As homosexuality came out of the closet and went mainstream in the Seventies, the gay bathhouse scene became a breeding ground for entertainers -- and AIDS, although it took the medical profession the better part of a decade to figure that one out.

Barry was involved in that scene, which may be why he appears so thin and cadaverous today.
