Beer of the World - IPA
The Economist ^ | 12/24/2016

Lagers may be ubiquitous but India Pale Ales are beers with a backstory

BEER is for drinking. But beer is also an occasion for conversation—and, if good enough, a subject for it, too. That is where India Pale Ales, or IPAs, come into their own. Few beers incite and enrich conversation as much. Their distinctive character—the “firm bitterness [that] lingers long and clean” in one, the “complex aromatic notes of citrus, berry, tropical fruit and pine” in another—spur discussions that spill over from tap rooms to websites with ease. The plethora of craft brewers that has sprung up over the past few decades provides ample scope for arguments about the relative merits of local brews and far-flung ones—with far-flung, these days, meaning from more or less anywhere on Earth.

I discovered craft beers less than two years ago, IPAs shortly after that, and am now getting tired of both. The whole craft beer thing is just too snooty and pretentious to me.

Give me bottle of Kirin Lager Classic and I’m a happy man.

For example... many of the Afghanistan mountain scenes of “Lone Survivor” were filmed about 6-7 miles south of me. During filming the crew got on Chilili Land Grant land. The local opinion was that if you had to choose between fighting the Taliban and the Land Grant folks, the Taliban was the way to go.

Tough folks, stayed put and saved their town during last year’s Dog’s Head Fire. Mrs. Slim and I evacuated for a few days.

Dogfish Head Brewery put out amazing IPA’s. Another Brewery that comes to mind immediately is Troegs Brewery in Hershey, PA. They make a few varieties of IPA that are lights out.

Try one of your local wine shops that also do beers and ask them for a light IPA. Most these days tend to be too hoppy and bitter. I’ve seen a few that even come in a bottle with cork!! But they weren’t anything special.

That one’s great, but my current favorite is Deschutes Brewery Fresh Squeezed IPA. It’s a flavor burst in your mouth. Deschutes also has a great porter - Black Butte.

There’s another category of IPA’s, far different from the originals, that many posters are stating are too heavy on the hops, known as American style IPA. They shouldn’t even be compared with a traditional IPAs such as Bass Ale or the like, since the very high hops content definitely puts them in their own category.

We finally got Yuengling (Mississippi) back in January of this year. Until then I would make trips to Alabama and fill the back of my pickup truck!

Bad news for me. Sold out of Victory. Picked up Alesmith IPA. Alesmith won brewery of the year last year(forget which beer mag.).

Their IPA is really good.
