Spending more time with family is almost always an euphemism for something else.
My guess is that he was threatened with permanent unemployment in his field, if he took the job.

I’m sorry to see him go. He is good at what he does.
My guess is he’s leaving because Spicer got the job he was coveting. But it’s probably best to take him at his word. His family needs a lot of attention right now.
