The import invasion of the 1970’s was caused by the need for higher MPG cars. Those Jap imports were piles of crap.

And as those imports improved, they forced our domestic piles of crap to improve.

The completely closed Jap market improved faster than our completely open market, how’s that possible? By your logic the Japs should have built the worst cars in the world. It seems domestic competition in Japan by itself was sufficient impetus to produce a better car which disproves your BS theory.
