You are historically inaccurate.
(R)'s gained in the 2002 off year elections and overcame Jumpin' Jim Jefford's defection to (I) in 2001, which forced the Senate leadership power share agreement with (D)'s.
(R)'s ran the House and Senate, spent $ like (D)'s under "compassionate conservative" Bush, and lost both House and Senate in the 2006 elections.
If (R)'s don't make that same mistake again (and I am reasonably sure we can avoid it with this new crop of conservatives, and with leadership from Trump's conservative Budget Office picks like Mulvaney), we will own the power US Gov't for a long time.

I knew it was a midterm where Rs lost the House and Senate. I just got the wrong midterm.
Still, my point remains, we can't just sit back and expect President Trump to do all the heavy lifting.
