I suspect that they are trying to get a ruling that frees them as well as other electors.

If they don’t have to vote for Hillary, then a whole bunch of other don’t have to vote for Trump in states that he won.

That’s the game they are playing.

It's either that, or they want to be free from voting for Clinton so they can vote for a third alternative.

The Twelfth Amendment limits Congress to voting for the top three Electoral College vote-getters. Currently, there are only two. If they can get a third person into the mix, even if with only a handful of votes, they still qualify as the third person. They want that third person to be a consensus candidate.

Then they hope to coerce Congress into voting for the third person.
