Ahhh, buttermilk.

I bought some recently for a fried green tomatoes recipe. It was a 1/2 gallon full fat Bavarian style. I ended up drinking a glass daily just cause it was so good. Reminded me of unflavored yogurt somewhat.

Store was out of it last time I checked but your post has started a craving. I’ll be buying it again as soon as I find it. Very satisfying.

Oh ... and the fried green tomatoes were fantastic! Buttermilk really helped the breading to stick.

At the end of each school year, beginning at age 7, my parents would put me on a plane to go spend the summer with my grandfather at his farm in northeast Ohio. Lunch every weekday was a glass of buttermilk and a braunschweiger sandwich on pumpernickel bread, German mustard, with a fresh picked apple.

Afternoon snack was a slice of Limburger cheese on a raw onion with a Rolling Rock beer (don’t ask how old I was...Gramps’ statement was “do a man’s work, have a man’s drink).

Saturdays we went to the Italian Club for breakfast (social members, not genetic but a lot of his lodge buddies were and that’s who we ate with) — fried eggs, sausages and peppers two cups of strong coffee. Sunday after church, the local greasy spoon for eggs, bacon and hash browns, more coffee.

Gramps lived to be 94. I buried my father last month at 85. Work hard (physically), eat whatever you want to.
