As many as 3 million California residents are in the country illegally, which means the state has an extraordinary stake in President-elect Donald Trump’s declared intention to crack down on illegal immigration.
It also could be a test of how far California, or any state, can go in defying the federal government.
As the Legislature reconvened briefly Monday, its two top leaders, Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León, and others pledged to implacably resist Trump – to “fight in the streets,” as Sen. Ricardo Lara, D-Los Angeles, put it during a heated debate.
“We must be defiant whenever justice, fairness and righteousness require,” Rendon said. “Californians do not need healing. We need to fight.”
There’s no doubt that California’s illegal immigrants are a net benefit, especially economically. They provide vital workers for difficult jobs that few of us would willingly do and they pay taxes to support services that in many cases they cannot access due to their status.
While California has taken many steps to quasi-legalize the undocumented and may do more, the rhetoric now coming out of the Capitol in effect denies their illegality and wrongly implies that they are victims of repression when the U.S. government enforces immigration laws.
Sovereign nations have an inherent right to control their borders. Therefore, it’s ultimately up to Congress and the president to make much-needed changes in those laws, not a state government whose overheated rhetoric makes probably meaningful reform less likely to occur by alienating residents of other states.
For all of the handwringing among Democrats, it should be noted that when they controlled both houses of Congress and the presidency and exercised that power on other issues, such as enacting Obamacare, they did nothing about immigration.

Little butts fill the “schools” to keep the “teachers” pay checks coming. The jobs they take are still jobs. I don’t buy the “No one else would do them”, crap. They would pay more, that is all, and we would see the cost passed on and the real inflation that we are suffering which is hidden by this abuse.
The dirty secret is that the illegals are a benefit to only a small minority, and most of them get payed through taxes.
California is ruled by Moonbeam and his pinko followers. There is a huge percentage of Californians that don’t back this liberal crap. The fighting Mexicans may find resistance from whites, blacks, Oriental’s and even other legal Mexicans. California is similar to the whole United states. Only a certain geographic portion has gotten control of the state with the help of illegals voting.
Disney World = All of Disneyland plus Epcot and a lot of other good stuff. And you'll be helping a red state economy.
Disneyland does have better weather, on average. Which is also California's only real advantage over the rest of the country. :)
Maybe you do need to fight, but I bet your addiction to federal funds is a stronger need...
CA will be in for a rude awakening when the fed $ begins to disappear.
I appreciate the economic powerhouse that CA is, despite the phenomenal taxes and regulation. But I’ve long suspected that if you pulled the fed $$ carpet out from under, it would absolutely collapse like a house of cards. I’m ready to try that.
If Trump removes those three million iilegals in California and does the exact same thing In New York, both California and New York become “RED” states. IMHO...Hillary Clinton lost the “popular vote” to Trump by about seven million votes....which were all illegal non citizen votes, dead people or folks that voted more then one time!!! The Democrat Party has never been involved in any election in which it did not cheat....big time!!!
Every state in the union must now make certain that every voter must prove they are an American citizen and present approved photo ID before being allowed to vote!!! The Federal government cannot do this. This is strictly a state function!!!

Maybe we should just build a wall around California and put all the illegals in there.
CA ALREADY sends more money to DC in taxes than benefits they receive. By about 30%.
It’s been so since the 50s.
And CA has 31% of all Welfare recipients in the nation.
