Scratch the facade a little and you'll find a very narrow definition of white. My Italian/Polish background lets me out.

Speaking of. Where I grew up in New England we were a mixed bag of various ancestors. Poles, Germans, Scots, Italian, Portuguese and French. Toss in some blacks and jews..we were a grand mess! I remember on special holidays grandmothers were busy cooking wonderful meals from :
“The homeland”...I loved being invited to “eat over”.
These same grandparents ate mac n cheese, burgers n fries, and assorted other “American” foods. They adopted our traditions as we incorporated theirs. They were proud of their heritage. And more proud to be us, American.
And like your family, over time we’ve all married each other. Wonderful, and American.
