Strangely, the author writes not a word about how he came to own the painting in the first place -- yet that should be a legitimate part of the painting's story.
This avoidance suggests to me that, when he acquired the painting, he knew there was something fishy about its provenance.

My partner, David, and I had purchased this very portrait ostensibly the work of a different artist a decade earlier from a major auction house in New York.
