Russia has just given up on trying to launch strikes from its rickety aircraft carrier

Russia's sole aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, began its first combat deployment to Syria with plenty of fanfare, but a recent report from IHS Jane's indicates Russia has given up entirely on launching strikes from the carrier.

Satellite imagery obtained by Jane's shows Su-33 jets and one MiG-29KR previously aboard the carrier now stationed at the Hmeymim air base in Syria alongside land-based planes from Russia's air force.

The Kuznetsov, never an entirely reliable system, had one of its MiG-29KRs crash in November, and another pilot had to eject after the Kuznetsov's landing gear failed and couldn't receive the aircraft, Jane's reports.

I think he's whipping up war hysteria to stay in power. I mean is he really afraid of Estonia? Or how about the neutral nations (Ireland and Sweden come to mind) where he has sent his bombers and submarines into their airspace and their territorial waters?

The dissidents now in the West who admire and flock to Putin remind me of years ago when Left wingers admired all kinds of Left Wing and communist loonies. The Left was mad at the USA so it rallied around Castro, Ho, Mao, Stalin, etc. Now we have putative conservatives who think Putin is a Christian and a conservative despite much evidence to the contrary.

I agree. I’ve been away from this site for several years (came back a bit around when the votes were coming in) and the site has changed. Lots of people acting like Putin is the good guy. How did this happen? Because he opposed Obama? Gee, like that’s hard to do! Just because someone outmaneuvered an idiot doesn’t make them a great leader.

That doesn’t change who Putin ~is~. A murderous authoritarian, the kind of person that we ~used to~ oppose here.

I think it wraps around. Democrat hatred becomes America hatred, which becomes love of dictators opposed to America, which becomes rejection of American values because those dictators do it, and eventually they’re singing the praises of authoritarian socialist nanny states.

Agree. Opposition to Obama doesn’t make Putin any less dangerous to world peace.

The people who disagree with Putin most and tell scary stories about Russia being a threat militarily look pretty foolish based on the information in this post.

Their aircraft carrier is a rickety old ineffective weapons system we are told.

Who builds up this nonsense about Russia being a threat?

Neocons who want the Middle East rearranged for Saudi and Qatari benefit.

The defense contractors (”military industrial complex”) get to do a lot of business in this kind of environment, too.

My gut feeling is that Russia should not be pushed because they may end up in with China even more than they already are.

Powerful people seem to want to make the world a more dangerous place.

I’ll bet someone has built a flying scale model.

They have! The guys at Flitetest are amazing. They have also built and flown the tilt rotor attack heli from Avatar and even a Star Destroyer from Star Wars that is around 6' long.

These neocons that you mention, are they the ones in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Poland, Romania, Georgia, Hungry, Sweden, Ireland, and other peaceful countries that Putin has threatened?

Was it a neocon who made Putin move more nuclear weapons to Kaliningrad to point at Europe?

Do you think that Putin's Military Industrial complex has stopped or is in abeyance under your peace-loving Putin?

Who specifically are these nefarious neocons? Be specific please.

John McCain and Lindsey Graham are the obvious ones for starters, the politicians who open their mouths about such things.

Then there’s the infrastructure of established bureaucrats and foreign policy elites.

The one example that stands out to me is Victoria Nuland, who served the Bush and Obama Administrations both and was recorded by the Russians as she tried to push events in Ukraine against Russia and any EU efforts to stop fighting with a cease-fire.

Here’s an article critical of her activities, ideas etc. etc.

A real nationalist would care about the economy, just like Trump. Russia’s economy is pretty weak so Putin has to distract the people with great shows of force

Part of it is also because of opposition to those who want us to start up with Russia. It’s a bad idea but it’s not because Putin is this amazing ally.

Poland and Czech are our real allies. Obama screwed them by taking away missile defense. We should reverse that policy
