U.S. military veterans were building barracks on Friday at a protest camp in North Dakota to support thousands of activists who have squared off against authorities in frigid conditions to oppose a multibillion-dollar pipeline project near a Native American reservation.
Veterans volunteering to be human shields have been arriving at the Oceti Sakowin camp near the small town of Cannon Ball, where they will work with protesters who have spent months demonstrating against plans to route the Dakota Access Pipeline beneath a lake near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, organizers said.
The Native Americans and protesters say the $3.8 billion pipeline threatens water resources and sacred sites.
Some of the more than 2,100 veterans who signed up on the Veterans Stand for Standing Rock group's Facebook page are at the camp, with hundreds more expected during the weekend. Tribal leaders asked the veterans, who aim to form a wall in front of police to protect the protesters, to avoid confrontation with authorities and not get arrested.

Maybe a bunch of veterans looking at too much fake news.
Read that the NA complained because a bunch of hippie, liberal types were showing up and making a mess if the place. One hippie that went out there was Jill “look at me” Stein.
So they like U.S. military stuff?
ROME PLOWS!!!
Make a lap or two of the perimeter, moving inward each day.
And then there was none.
If they're on the wrong side of an issue, they're on the wrong side of the issue. Period.
One hippie who is now a fugitive from justice. There is a warrant on her for Failure to Appear. Criminal Trespass and Destruction of Private Property I think.
I know several young veterans who don’t know what to do with their lives.
Some question why and what they did in Iraq and Afganistan. If I were them I could easily have ill feelings towards the establishment they thought they fought to help.
They were trained to fight and many are now lost in a crippled world.
They need a better cause than disrupting the pipeline but their presence is a call to be a part of something worth fighting for.
Hopefully We can all help Trump deliver on making America Great again.
I suspect it will take some patience and good leadership
The indian leaders did not attend the 467 public forums to discuss the pipeline, and they refused to meet with the Corps of Engineers in private sit-downs over 12 times. The pipeline took several re-routes to avoid the indian land (mainly to avoid paying rent for the crossing of their land).
“Some of the more than 2,100 veterans...”
Some? Like 10? 30? 100? What does ‘some’ mean?
Yet another example as to why the left wins: i.e. economic pressure by direct attack.Conservatives must ORGANIZE & FIGHT!
I agree with you.
Hmmm interesting supposition there at the end. I hadn’t thought of that
Why don’t they just change the route and go around the reservoir and burial ground?
Oh I certainly agree with that sentiment. Veterans are not automatically right about every issue ... and in fact they disagree about every issue ... just like non veterans.
Barry’s domestic army?
I sympathize with them. I wonder what was accomplished in Iraq and the MENA in general in our various involvements over there.
This story seems unlikely.
“Okay boys, let’s see those DD-214s.”
The pipeline will be 92 feet under the lake; the thickness of the pipeline under the lake will be thickened; and there will be control valves at each end. The risk of spilling or leaking is extremely low and absolutely less than shipping the oil by truck or rail.
