Trump Likely Just Infuriated China With The US's First Call To Taiwan Since 1979 Alex Lockie and Natasha Bertrand,

President-elect Donald Trump spoke with the president of Taiwan by phone on Friday, in a move likely to infuriate Beijing and hinder US-China relations.

"President-elect Trump spoke with President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan, who offered her congratulations," according to a readout of the call released by Trump's transition team. "During the discussion, they noted the close economic, political, and security ties" between Taiwan and the United States, the statement continued. "President-elect Trump also congratulated President Tsai on becoming President of Taiwan earlier this year."

The call, first reported by the Financial Times, is the first time a US president has directly spoken with Taiwan's leadership in more than 30 years. The White House was not made aware of the call until after it occurred, according to The New York Times.

The US suspended formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1979 after establishing a One China position — which states that "there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China" — in an effort to establish diplomatic channels with Beijing.

Beijing views Taiwan as a province of China, whereas Taiwan — which has its own democratically elected government — has a more complicated view of the nations' relationship.

Ing-wen, who was elected the first female president of Taiwan in May, told The Washington Post over the summer that she hopes Chinese President Xi Jinping "can appreciate that Taiwan is a democratic society in which the leader has to follow the will of the people."

Analysts were quick to point out that the phone call will likely infuriate Beijing.

"Trump almost surely unaware of Taiwan-China sensitivities before taking President's call," Bremmer added. "They don't yet have Asia expertise on team."

He's obviously living rent-free in somebody's head. Notice that he ISN'T President yet?

"Moron" is too mild a word.

Agree.

The Chinese have been stealthily waging war against the American people for quite long time. For too long. they absolutely have to be stopped! Trumps inner seething rage against the Chinese government, I completely understand.

good for him. I hate it when friends in real life tell me I cant talk to that person if I want to be there friend. I hate it even more when a country does it. its up to china to establish its legitimacy as governing that Island. the way I see it the island has been its own country for over 70 years. there is no valid claim by china over the territory because there is a functioning government there.

Just saw Trump’s tweet that the president of Taiwan called him to congratulate him. Still can’t believe the MSM.

New York Times story, Dec 17, 2015 (LESS than 1 year ago):

China Protests Sale of U.S. Arms to Taiwan

HONG KONG — The Obama administration’s announcement that it would sell $1.83 billion worth of arms to Taiwan, including two warships and antitank missiles, has drawn a swift rebuke from China, which threatened to penalize the companies that made the armaments and summoned a United States diplomat to register an official protest.
"Trump OBAMA almost surely unaware of Taiwan-China sensitivities before taking President's call Selling Tawain arms," Bremmer added. "TheyThe Obama Administration doesn't yet have Asia expertise on team."

Love it! Used the video to poke one of my uber-liberal friends who was having a hissy fit about Trump’s ignorance at destroying our relationship with China (based on a HuffPo article). They were ranting about how dangerous Trump is, and pointedly said they weren’t interested in any rebuttal from Trump supporters. (Nice and open-minded, eh?). I just posted a link to the video and left it there.

A shot across Communist China's bow.

More leverage over them in future dealings.

Trump knows China well - long history of dealings there.

His Grand daughter Arabella was a big hit in Chinese social media, reciting poetry in Mandarin for Chinese New Year:

There's going to be massive butthurt at the State Department the next 8 years. Massive. It's always been stuffed to the brim with anti-American Leftists.

This is a good time to conduct a hiring freeze and open up an embassy in Antarctica. Begin a 3 year rotation for all State Department employees till there are none left. Then start over. Hire strictly from the military.

Elaine Chao, who Trump has selected as Transportation Secretary, is Taiwanese.

Not only is she fluent in Chinese, but her wealthy father had a close personal relationship with former Communist Chinese Premier Jiang Zemin, as well as elites on the mainland and in Taiwan.

No, Trump did not just fall off the turnip truck - and Trump was not elected by the sudden appearance of 60 million white supremacists.

At some point, reality may begin to creep into the media’s bubble. It will be a harsh awakening for them. In the meantime, they will squander what little is left of their credibility with such off-the-wall misrepresentations.

The NY Times is blathering on about this yipping and whimpering about Trump inviting the Philippine President accused of “human right abuses”. I didn’t see the NY times whimpering and blathering when Obama went over to the Saudis and kissed and bowed to the Saudi King who rules over a country that oppresses every damn thing in the sun which isn’t Muslim and isn’t male. Hypocrisy of the NY Times the scum rag of the century.

Is all this a matter of setting a new course or will there be a course correction/adjustment in the future? In this case, I hope it’s for real. China needs a sobering pill.

Typical Oligarch trick. Accuse Trump of doing something wrong as President, when he is still a private citizen and not President.
