In the immediate aftermath of the election, mayors from some of America's largest cities told Donald Trump that they would not comply with any of his planned efforts to shut down their so-called sanctuary cities and they would not enforce federal immigration law.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said his city is not going to sacrifice a half million people who live among us" by turning them over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Chicago Mayor and former Barack Obama chief of staff, Rahm Emmanuel reassured illegal immigrants that despite their post-election anxieties you are safe in Chicago.
The sentiment was echoed by mayors and local officials in other major sanctuary cities across the country including Seattle, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Santa Fe, N.M., Austin, Tex., Denver, Col. and others.
This defiance was prompted by the high likelihood that Donald Trump will make good on his campaign promise to end sanctuary cities, cut federal law enforcement funding to cities that do not cooperate with ICE, and triple the number of immigration enforcement agents.
According to the Center for Immigration Studies, there are approximately 300 jurisdictions that have sanctuary policies, a number that has increased under the Obama administration. Jessica Vaughan, the director of policy studies at the Center, classifies a sanctuary as any jurisdiction that has a policy, law, or ordinance that actively obstructs immigration enforcement or shields illegal aliens from detection.
According to Vaughan, aside from violations of federal law, the practical effect of the sanctuary policies "is a public safety matter."

When the feds want to dictate speed limits and such, they always threaten to withhold funds from uncooperative entities, and it works. No doubt it will work this time too if Trump has the starch to hold the cities' feet to the fire.
I have no idea how much federal money Chicago gets, but I do know the city’s finances are so shaky that they recently instituted a tax on internet streaming that has everybody steaming. So I suspect anything they’re cut off from revenue wise we’ll have Rahm and his minions screaming like stuck piggies.
San Francisco alone gets more than a billion a year in fed funding. That kind of shut off would cause major disruptions to a city like that.
a surgical approach is needed
Yes, but if the actual taxpayers in those cities get hit with any sort of local tax raise to cover the cities losses, the mayors won't be around for much longer...:^)
“I believe our Seattle libfag mayor said that federal funding was three percent of the budget.”
I’m pretty sure the State of WA gets a huge chunk of Fed LEO funding. And state funding to Seattle may be another few points, or a dozen.
If they are both cut off, that’s impact to LEO. They’ll feel it.
But I believe Congress needs to draft another law that says any jurisdiction that does not fully comply and cooperate will loose ALL Federal infrastructure spending...roads, bridges, trains to nowhere etc. All transportation funding.
ICE should not be waiting for notices from local law enforcement that they are releasing an illegal. As soon as the local LEO checks the FBI databases to see if a suspect has an FBI record, that system should automatically check ALL government databases to see if the person is a legal citizen. ICE, SS, IRS, DMV, Jury Systems, etc. — if you can’t find a record of an adult in those databases, they need to be looked at by ICE.
Then, don’t tell the LEO anything about the immigration status, just the criminal status. Send ICE to the jail with a federal warrant to pick up the illegal and move him to a federal holding facility until the LEO decides whether to charge with a local crime. Prevent the illegal from ever leaving custody — no bail, no own recognizance, no release period until deportation.
This question is open to anyone who can give an answer, and I’d like one. At what point, if any, will those who are defying and disobeying federal law by maintaining sanctuary cites (and now sanctuary college campuses)be subject to arrest and/or prosecution? Or are they exempt?
My guess is that Trump will ONLY fund LEOs...
Congress will be handled by Trump...He’s not a “professional politician”...He won’t allow Congress to boondoggle his proposals if they are good for America and Americans...
Arrest the mayors for harboring fugitives and refusing to enforce federal law.
Cut funding to Sanctuary Cities, make E-Verify required for employment, along with ALL applications for “free stuff”, eliminate any handouts to illegals and they will scurry south.
Turn off the money spigot and sit back, then bring them up on federal charges and jail them
Why would you punish an entire state for the actions of one city...and why would you target public safety?
That makes no sense.
Sanctuary should only be for elephants!
You know, this worry that illegals won’t report crimes or be witnesses is a poor rationale.
The more illegals you remove from the community, the more the witnesses will be legal residents with no worries about deportation. Illegals must make terrible witnesses anyway as they can be blackmailed, threatened or disappeared by criminals; or get deported at any time by ICE and throw out the court case that relied on their testimony. No LEO should want to have to rely on them.
Yup. Drone the mayors. j/k
Somebody should teach the author how to write a news story. They didn’t get to what the headline talks about until 8 paragraphs into the story. What ever happened to putting who, what, when, where and why in the opening paragraph, if not the opening sentence?

WASHINGTON - D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is asking the city council to act fast on a proposal to crack down on the homeless population in the city. If it passes, it would essentially make it easier to deny shelter to people who cannot prove they have lived in the District before they ended up on the streets. Homelessness is a big problem in the city. Despite the mayor declaring the District of Columbia as a sanctuary city earlier this month and welcoming immigrants with open arms, she wants to be able to turn away some homeless families looking for shelter. Bowser said immigrants will have to prove residency just like anyone else.
NOW...turning away NON DC RESIDENTS
AND...forcing people to SHOW ID
Thought that was 'Blasphemy #1' in the Lib Playbook
(Yes, I realize there are NO RULES when it comes to LIBS)
PASS THE POPCORN
Also make them criminally and civilly liable for any crimes that an illegal commits after a sanctuary city releases them without turning them over to ICE.

Democrat voters over ALL others, over all law and all ethics .... “Yes, Virginia, politics IS their religion.”
