Sounds like an RCA television antenna I saw in Walmart last year. Made in China but the box had huge print that read, ENGINEERED IN THE USA.

Bought a Maytag dishwasher a few years back, thinking I was getting an American made product.

Got to looking at the shipping box..."Assembled in the USA"

...and there were parts missing.

I used to work for RCA in Indiana back in 1982.
There were buildings (mostly now gone) where, at one time all of the color televisions manufactured in the entire world were made here in Indiana. The oldest buildings in Bloomington were used to build radios for the WWII effort.
Now, nothing.....
