I noticed the waiter lingering around my table a little more than usual. For the first time at this buffet-style restaurant, the waiter seemed agitated. Normally, he would be singing to mesmerized patrons in between busing tables and asking if customers needed any assistance in a place that is essentially self-serve.
"That man called me boy," he finally told me, unprompted, while pointing his eyes toward an older white gentleman in blue overalls.
"He said, 'boy, go get me some sweet tea,'" the waiter went on, mostly under his breath. He didn't want anyone else to hear.
"I'm a man! I'm a father," he told me. I could see that he was fighting back tears and the urge to show that man, in no uncertain terms, that he was no one's boy.
The waiter, a black man in his 30s, told his white supervisor about the incident but was told to just ignore it, that maybe the man didn't mean any harm.
But he couldn't -- it hurt too much -- and that's why he was standing at my table, commiserating with the only other black person in the restaurant. He had no other option. He couldn't confront the man directly without the potential of being called overly sensitive or, worse yet, losing his job.
I left him a larger-than-usual tip in hopes that gesture might provide some respite in an untenable situation. He needed the job. But he needed his dignity, too. He struggled, and in the end did what many had done before him -- swallowed hard and got back to work.
That was a few months ago. His was one of many stories that came back to me after election night, because it is illustrative of what many people of color are feeling as the words "President-elect...

I’m white...When I was 18 I could pass for 14, and I was constantly called “boy,” “youngster,” etc., by anyone and everyone over 30.
OK. Say we accept this story as completely true:
How is this Trump’s fault, or the election’s fault?
I live in South Carolina and most of the black men down here think that Hillary Clinton is a lying, corrupt, change-nothing douche...
Black men don’t want the continual tired old race card pandering bullshit anymore, they don’t want illegal immigrants or terrorists in our country, they don’t care about transgendered toilets, they want well paid jobs...
Stupid story. Only a racist would create such an implausible connection.
Good grief. What about Germans who called waiters “boy” over since before modern times. And in France where since millennia they call waitrs “garcon” which is boy. Those were all white men.
Surely someone else heard it, it it was actually said. Then again, what in hell does this have to do with Donald Trump, unless you are fabricating a narrative story?
Sounds like some more fake news. Unless of course the elderly white man who said boy was Bill Clinton or some other senile Democrat.
My uncle called me “Boy” until the day he died.
As in “hey boy. How ‘ya doin?”
As is “hey boy, grab the horns and help me drag this deer back to the truck”
I still miss him.
Shoulda beat his ass I guess. Insulting me like that.....
Good grief....after what white people have to put up with in this day & age, this cat gets upset over THAT?
Puh-lease
Yes, my....what a coincidence
This is true. Nothing is thought of it when grown men (white, black, whatever) are called “son” or “boy”, but mostly by people who know them, like a man tells a tall tale, and the man listening says, “Aww com’on son, you know that ain’t nothing but a tale”.
And this disturbing incident is PEOTUS Trump’s fault because _________ and worthy of a column because ___________.
The alleged incident happened during the Øbongo regime yet he wants to blame Trump. Perfect “liberal logic”.
Yeah, and in the South everyone is called a ‘good ol boy’.
“That man called me boy,”
So? One of Cab Calloway’s most famous songs begins with “HEY BOY!”
“Boy” had always been used to call a pager or waiter in hotels. Remember Hey Boy from Paladin? He got upset when someone called him “Hey You!” He said... “My name not Hey YOU! My name Hey Boy!”
Then in North by Northwest, Cary Grant called over the page boy, with “Oh Boy..”

I was thinking the first stories we were going to hear after November 8 was the huge increase in the number of homeless and hopeless people in America. And the plight of those where the U.S. military are hitting civilian targets.
But no. Guess those stories will have to wait awhile.
Lol! Having worked in a restaurant in my younger days, the first thing I thought was that routine was probably this waiters racket, he identifies some liberal wracked by white guilt (maybe by their I’m with her t-shirt). Then he gives the ol You see that guy, he called me boy... routine and out roles the huge tip. He probably manages to pull it of several times a day...

This.
South Carolina, the initiator of the American Civil War that was supposedly over slavery (i.e., whether blacks were totally human or not), is one of the states where the black population percentage is far greater than the national average.
Guys in overalls are usually farmers. Before Mexicans, blacks used to be steady agricultural employees.
You don’t usually stay and work in oppressive places in the U.S. Don’t they teach liberals about the Underground Railroad anymore? Oppressed blacks would flee to where they felt more free.
More FAKE NEWS memes from CNN.
CNN has become the Comedic Version of old Soviet News Media.
I watched CNN for about 5 minutes today, and had to turn the channel after they said, “Trump’s crusade against Voter Fraud, for which absolutely no evidence of it exists.”
This came right after they said, “Trump has not held a news conference with the media in 45 days!”, (without mentioning the months Hillary had no pressers, and they did not care).
The old Soviet Information Ministry retirees must just be laughing their asses off watching this.
Hmm, and lefties NEVER say anything hurtful.
They are always demure and polite.
Just like a little cuddly chinchilla.
Agreed and he’s likely a lib....crybabies all.
