306-232 is not an electoral landslide by any stretch of the imagination. Trump won, clearly, but let’s not get carried away.
An electoral landslide requires at least 400 EVs, if not more, and near 40 states, Trump won 30 states. People throw around the term “landslide” with greater and greater frequency. Obama never had a landslide for instance but the media would of the say he did.
While I see your point, I look at it this way:
Think for a moment how poorly Hillary really did. On the day she announced her candidacy, a year and a half ago, she had NY, CA, and IL in her pocket. No effort, no money to spend, these were automatic EVs for her that totalled up to 104. She started with that. Yes, she had some NE states locked, and Trump had a few (MT, WY, ID) but the NE and Trumps were a wash, so Hillary really started with a 104 advantage, meaning she only needed to campaign to win 166 to make the magic 270, while Trumps campaign need to win the full 270.
At the end of it all, she only won 128 electoral votes (ending up at 232) and Trump won 306. He outperformed her by two and one-half times in the campaign. A complete rout.
