The Pentagon recently released detailed guidance that allows U.S. military personnel to carry privately owned, concealed firearms on base, a move that the Army's service chief argued against publicly.
"Arming and the Use of Force," a Nov. 18 Defense Department directive approved by Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work, lays out the policy and standards that allow DoD personnel to carry firearms and employ deadly force while performing official duties.
But the lengthy document also provides detailed guidance to the services for permitting soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guard personnel to carry privately owned firearms on DoD property, according to the document.
Commanders, O-5 and above, "may grant permission to DoD personnel requesting to carry a privately owned firearm (concealed or open carry) on DoD property for a personal protection purpose not related to performance of an official duty or status," the document states.
Applicants must be 21 years of age or older, the age many states require an individual to be to own a firearm, according to the document. Proof of compliance may include a concealed handgun license that is valid under federal, state, local or host-nation law where the DoD property is located.
"Written permission will be valid for 90 days or as long as the DoD Component deems appropriate and will include information necessary to facilitate the carrying of the firearm on DoD property consistent with safety and security, such as the individual's name, duration of the permission to carry, type of firearm, etc.," according to the document.

The modern military is a leftist social experiment, doomed to failure.
I refuse to participate.
Why can’t bases just honor the home states permits. Why are employees on the base left defenseless to and from work? Odd how the bases pick and chose what state laws to impose.
We have a state law baring employers from blocking right to carry in our car even on the employers parking lot. Employers can keep people from carrying into a building but state reaffirmed our right to maintain arms in vehicle. Federal base said screw the state and exempted our states laws again.
None of the Armed Forces have enough sidearms to issue to each soldier, sailor, airman, Marine, or Coast Guardsman. Most of the firearms on hand in the military are select fire rifles/carbines (M16, M4, etc) or machine guns, which are inappropriate for general carry.
The military leadership’s reluctance to permit carry is related to risk aversion. While there have been few instances of blue on blue violence in Iraq or Afghanistan, where almost everybody carries, there have been a couple. IIRC a soldier shot up a clinic in Baghdad back around ‘08 or so.
In garrison, commanders are harshly judged on soldier misbehavior, which generates training related to eliminating DUIs, domestic violence, etc... I can imagine he stink if a soldier armed under this policy committed a crime.
Federal law allows for commanders to allow personnel to carry at all times anywhere. All we have to do is remove the SECEF prohibiting it.
I have seen similar state laws, and most have companies, mostly energy companies that are exempt. It should be a universal law without exception. Of course federal 2 Amendment carry would take off the entire issue.
Wait till Trump takes office, you can bet that’s exactly what will happen, and he will do more than withdraw highway funding. To put our vets in harms way because of a bunch of liberal whiny ass punks who call radical Islamic terrorist attacks “Work place violence”, want to disarm our military is about as outrageous as it gets.
Fine - you can (with commander approval) carry your weapon on base.
How do you get from your home to the base?
I wonder why simply arming the sentries on duty with government-issued weapons is such a hard thing.
That's a really good question. You're confronted with breaking the base rules or compromising your security.
“Shouldnt all service personnel be issued a sidearm just like police?”
They don’t get squat until a war or some serious training is happening.
That is an out of date map. But your point is sound.
