The Governor of South Carolina, Republican Nikki Haley, has reportedly been picked by President-elect Donald Trump to be the ambassador of the US to the United Nations.

According to the Washington Post, her views about national security and US military are in line with the GOP's hawkish stance. Haley met Trump in New York at the Trump Tower last Thursday.

If the appointment is confirmed, Haley could be replaced by Lieutenant Governor Henry McMaster, a top Trump aide.

"I'm going to cut you some slack for not knowing that all of those things would be supported by the majority of the electorate in SC even if one of the horrifying kardashians was governor of SC."

No need for slack. The people won't get a say because it won't be a ballot box issue. That's why the Governorship is important. Its worth having an ally rather than someone who is set to fight you, perhaps even as part of a plan to increase their profile.

Could there have been other States Governors who was ripe to be offered an enticement to move? Sure 18 of them. How many have Republican Lt Gov, who have supported Trump's ideas? Currently, 25 states elect a lieutenant governor on a ticket with the governor, while 18 states elect a lieutenant governor separately. Five states do not have a lieutenant governor. There are currently 36 Republicans and 14 Democrats serving as lieutenant governor or serving as the first in the line of succession. With that in mind which state do you suggest has the scenario you think Trump should have looked for?

Differing opinions is part of the game. I think it was a good move for the reasons I stated above. We will get to see. One thing I am sure of is that second guessing Trump at every turn and in time to the MSM's chorus is a loser's game.

Might she think there will be more scope for her talents in DC and that it would be more expansive life style?

No, this is a “kick the problem child into a place she can do no harm so my ally gets the important job” move. The SC LT Gov is a Trump ally. Haley moving to UN removes a blow hard anti Trumper to a meaningless job and promotes an Trump ally to an important job.

I am surprised she fell for it.

It’s amazing how blind Trump supporters twist every announcement into him playing some diversionary tacit or the press simply lying about what he’s doing because he’s just so smart that most can’t comprehend.

Haley is a Tea Party crash test dummy. He’s appointing her to curry favor with McCain and Graham, not to reward the Lt. governor.

Looks as though your animosity towards Trump is rendering you blind and dumb!

Ah! I get it: "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."

Interesting idea. He also defangs Nikki, pulls the rug out from under lindsey graham, and gets credit for magnanimity, outreach, and "diversity."

The man's a genius.
