S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley tapped to be Trump’s U.N. ambassador

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, a rising Republican star and daughter of Indian immigrants, has accepted President-elect Donald Trump’s offer to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in the coming administration, according to a person familiar with the selection process.

The move, which will be announced Wednesday morning, was first reported by the Post and Courier , comes as Trump advisers are seeking to diversify his ranks and marks his first female appointment to a cabinet-level post.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a decision that has not yet been announced by Trump’s transition team.

Haley, 44, who is serving her second term, has worked on trade and labor issues as governor but brings little foreign policy experience. Her views on various U.S. military and national security matters usually fall within the GOP’s hawkish mainstream.

Trump met with Haley last Thursday at Trump Tower in New York as part of the round of meetings the president-elect has held.

If confirmed, Haley would be replaced by South Carolina’s Lt. Gov. Henry McMaster, a top Trump ally. His ascension is seen inside of Trump’s inner circle as a welcome consequence of her departure, the person said — a way to promote them both.

Yes. It’s at least a three-fer. Americans of Indian descent were very much in evidence amongst Trump supporters. I seem to recall that DJT had a rally in NJ of Indian supporters.

India is the most populous country on earth, a bulwark against islamic extremism. And DJT is courting them like they’re the prettiest girls at the ball.

Keep your friend’s close and your enemies closer. Methinks he’s gonna do something similar with that Dem Hawaiian congresschick.

Disappointing choice, but luckily the amount of damage Haley can inflict as ambassador to the UN is actually quite limited. At least she didn’t get picked as Secretary of State.

I've detested Haley ever since she sided with the PC Left to take down the Confederate Flag from the SC state capital, and then went on to side with the multiculturalists again on refugees and amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Haley will no doubt try to use her ambassadorship to the UN as a bully pulpit to promote the admission of more Middle Eastern refugees to the US and to push for liberalized immigration laws generally. I'm frankly surprised and disappointed that Trump picked her.

"Yep. The Lt. Gov. helped Trump win the SC primary."

Exactly what this is about, mostly. The added bonus that Trump can diversify his administration.

McMaster is now a lock to be elected. The challenge was getting out of the primary, which Trump, as a sitting president, may have been hesitate to get involved in. Now I'm sure he'll throw his full support behind McMaster.

The ultimate goal may well have been to have S.C’s Lt. Gov. promoted. Throw Nicki into a relatively neutral position and elevate her successor.

Check-mate.

Haley will do what Trump tells her to do.

There is one way Nikki Haley is perfect for the UN.

The UN is a muslim dominated institution and Haley is a woman, was raised in a Sikh household, and, as governor was anti-BDS/pro-Israel.

She is a thumb in the eye to muslim hardliners in the UN.

Many of the qualities described on this thread as faults will actually be assets at the UN, which is PC in a way most of us can’t even imagine. Diplomacy and politeness are a fine art form, as one can imagine where all the cultures of the earth try to work together or pretend to in order to further their country’s agenda. There is intrigue and behind-the-scenes activity that she may be quite good at as well. Think of her as a middleweight chess piece.

And for Governor Haley it will be a nice gig, with lots of fringe benefits that UN ambassadors and other reps enjoy greatly on their government’s dime. It’s a win-win. A brilliant choice.

In 2015, Haley was one of several governors who asked the State Department not to resettle Syrian refugees in their states, citing a “lack of historical and verifiable intelligence” on their identities.

Haley is a Cheap Labor Express Republican like most of South Carolina’s elected officials.
It would have been better to shut them out.

Haley was certainly GOPe.

Still, I trust Trump in this till he proves me wrong. Haley will be working for Trump. He will demand loyalty. If she doesn’t comply with his policy she will be replaced with someone who will. I’m good with that.

The UN Ambassador is a do nothing position. So, it gets her out of S. Carolina, and after she is out, DJT can withdraw from the U.N., leaving her SOL.

nailed it!

Trump starting to disappoint big time. This worthless RINO hates Trump and will do everthing in her power to undermind him. He should be rewarding supporters not NeverTrumpers. Just a terrible pick. The only thing worse would be Mittens as Sec of State.

She's almost as bad as Lindsey Graham. Why does a conservative state like SC elect and repeatedly re-elect these people?

Someone on this thread mentioned a good upshot of getting Haley out of the Governor's seat and into a no-consequence job. The Lieutenant Governor (McMaster) is much more solid on a number of issues. I think McMaster, unlike Haley, opposes amnesty for illegals and supports Federal defunding of sanctuary cities.

She was already term-limited out. She couldnt run again. Terrible pick for Trump. Hopefully the senate does not confirm her.

Thanks for the correction. This means that Haley is bad (supported Gang of Eight amnesty package, wants “vetted” refugees) but isn’t quite as terrible as I had thought.
