Well, the whole idea of a party system was not encouraged by the Constitutional authors.

What we have coming up soon, with Trump and Pence and a host of other serious people, may be more like the divinely inspired vision that many of the forefathers had. Where the real action will move back to the primaries and there aren’t any two fixed parties, only a major party (GOP) and its challengers.

I believe the most credible challenge will look like libertarian, and that only if this current Trump jump started GOP gets too far right for where the people are.

You are correct. Actually, there were no parties during the first and second presidential election. It was only during the race between Adams and Jefferson that one became the representative of the Federalists (Adams) and one became the representative of the Democrat-Republicans (Jefferson). There are actually many warnings by founders as to the evil of political parties.
