Beginning last summer, I wrote a series of articles for Conservative Review comparing Donald Trump and Ronald Reagan. The series was inspired by Trump enthusiasts insisting that their man was the closest thing to Americas next Ronald Reagan. Donald Trump was no less than another Reagan. Most central to the Trump-Reagan thesis was the curious insistence that the underestimated Trump, just like the once-underestimated Reagan, would rise up and crush Hillary Clinton in Reaganesque fashion. It would be a landslide.
Don't Miss A Tweet Profile Picture Conservative Review @CR Follow Well, with the historic vote of Tuesday, November 8, 2016, and Trump nabbing the presidency from the grasp of Hillary Clinton, Ive received many emails from Trump enthusiasts claiming vindication. One emailer told me that Donald Trump will be chiseled on Mt. Rushmore one day, the end-game of his Reaganesque march and crowning landslide victory. Yes, the emailer used precisely that word, and repeatedly demanded that I concede the landslide.
Its like 1980 all over again.
Before addressing how wildly inaccurate such claims are, I want to pause to congratulate Donald Trump, his team, and his devoted followers. I also want to tell them that theyre damned lucky, and in their heart of hearts, they should know it. Trump could have very, very easily lost, and really probably should have, as Ill show in a minute by reviewing some of the shocking data.

Trumps win vs. Reagans blowout: Why 2016 is NOT 1980

.@marklevinshow @CR Yr arguement ignores deep demo changes in numerous states. Can u imagine RR winning governor in Cali today. I can't.

@marklevinshow The man hasn't been sworn in for chrissake. Why don't you just leave it alone? He won against ALL odds. W/out your help.
Isidro Marino @pandemoniumcirc 55m55 minutes ago
@marklevinshow desperately searching for a loss in a historic victory. This is why Levin is part of the neocon past, not the trump future.

@marklevinshow Important? This is just establishment conservatives not wanting trump to be associated with their darling.

FU Levin the purist. If he wants things his way he should run for office.
Get off the phone!
One way that 2016 is much like 1980 is that weakness by a couple leftist presidents toward Iran contributed in Republicans winning the election.
In some ways Trump’s win is even MORE impressive.
The Democrats have been packing the electorate with millions of third-world voters and indoctrinated young people since 1980. Millions of sane voters have gone to the great polling place in the sky.
Did Reagan suffer the systemic MSM assault? No.
Grow up, Levin. Your never-ending contempt is annoying and a waste of precious airtime — 770 AM, NY, 6-9 PM.
Mark Levin sucks a$$
He’s a lost soul looking for a revenue stream.
FUML
You’d think Levin would be sick of being so consistently wrong that he’d just finally shut up. But noooooo...
No more Levin for me.
It is a valid point that Trump’s 2020 re-election is going to be tight, unless he does turn the economy around.
We have 4 years, so it’s good to be warned ahead of time and take things seriously now.
Otherwise, we will only have 4 years.
levins a maroon. Trump didn’t target the popular vote because that’s not how you get elected. Trump won the Electoral College by a landslide margin.
Yes, he did. It was just that there were no 24/7 news channels. However, there was no conservative talk radio, as the "fairness" doctrine was still in place, and there was no internet (meaning no social media as well).
Don’t agree with Levin. Reagan did not lose five states to massive voter fraud. Add those in, along with the fact the msm is now fully an organ of the radical left, and it is 1980 again.
Mark Levin and Hugh Hewitt both came to Washington in the early 80’s as young lawyers working in the Reagan Administration.
Both appear to be suffering from a case of Carlos Danger Envy over ending up as talk show hosts and not as high-powered Washington movers and shakers.
Love the responses
Sure Trump is no Reagan So what? I don’t think any of us thought he would be. The fact that he won is historic. No one else could have taken the pounding Trump did and still won.
Tell me who else in the GOP could have kept up the campaign schedule Trump did? Three stops a day....and rarely in the same state. He went to the people direct. That is why it was like Reagan Trump campaigned where the voters were.....not the bots
Also, both Reagan and Trump are good at arguing on their own terms, not allowing the media, and therefore the left, to define the debate. Bypassing the media and talking directly to the electorate. Also, not beholden to monied cronies and hesitancy to rock the political boat that country club R’s have.
Trump might turn out to be better than Reagan.
Reagan won a much bigger win against a sitting president. He had opposition of course, but in 1980, there was no 24/7 news cycle or cable TV like we have now. The opposition to Trump included, but limited to: All the networks, all the cable stations, including much of FOX, almost every newspaper and magazine, the Bush machine (thank you Reagan for saddling us with that albatross, the Clinton machine, the DNC, George Soros and his spider web of “activist” groups throughout the nation, the neo-con artists (again a big hand for Reagan for saddling us with them as well), and last, but not least, all of Hollyweird.
So, anyone may quibble about Trump’s “lackluster popular vote performance” which now shows that in 49 states he won by a total of 2.1 MILLION votes, only California the state most flooded with illegals (another hand for Reagan for his amnesty and not securing the border) gave her 3.1 million more votes than Trump, bringing her popular vote total to 1.1 million more than Trump.
If Trump performs well, and it looks like he just might do so, he could win a very decisive popular vote AND even larger Electoral College victory in 2020.
Re 1980 and Trump would've run, I think we'd see the same results Reagan did.
I don't believe even Reagan could win Oregon, Mass and Cali now. Too far gone.
