I agree that Erdogan is no friend, but my memory says he was turned in the direction of the radicals. It’s been a few years back and I don’t remember the details.

Perhaps Flynn can restore that old relationship. I remember during the cold war that Turkey was a desired assignment. For that to have been true, there is no doubt that it was friendly to the US. Those citizens STILL live in Turkey.

We need to restore Turkey. It would be a geographic plus to have their support in an era of a resurgent Russia.

I seriously doubt that anyone can restore Turkey from the outside. Historically, the military was pro-western and secular. Erdogan is pro-Islam and authoritarian and recently anti-American. We’ll see how it evolves. I’m not even sure that Flynn would care. His relationship with other tyrants, like Putin, does not inspire me to think he favors civil and democratic rule.

More and more of those US-friendly Turks are being picked up and jailed by Erdogan’s security folks. So let’s hope Gen. Flynn’s buddies in the regime get some of our friends released.
